Yamaha 2500 system power button no longer works on remote

The system power button on my remote (for Yamaha 2500) no longer works, the standby (shutoff) and all other buttons work. I can turn it on using the front panel, this seem to happen when the remote batteries were very week but that may be a coincidence. Is there a way to rest the code for the remote without loosing all the component (CD, DVD, SAT) codes that I memorized?

Are you rsure that the component selected in the LCD display of the Yamaha remote says "System." If not use the arrow keys to scan through the different words util you get to it, then try to power the receiver on. I have had this happen before.

is the selector switch on right side of remote in the 'amp' position rather than 'source' or 'tv'?
