This being my first post,I would like to say what a great site this is. I have spent the last several months doing alot of reading from the reveiws, articles and forums, there is so much info that at times it become's overwhelming.

Which brings me to my first question, recently purchased the Yamaha 2500 and now it's time for some speakers. I'm looking to spend $800.00-$1000.00 on the fronts (will be adding center, sub & surrounds later), the Polk RTi/10 & RTi/12's are at the top of the list. Because I'll be adding the rest of the speakers in the future, I am interested in speakers that have good all around sound. I have read that the RTi/10 & RTi/12 need a good receiver or amp to bring out the best in these speakers, will the 2500 be able to drive these speakers? Any comments on these speakers or any other recomendations(other brands) would be great!

Thanks

Welcome to the forum!

You've made an excellent choice of receiver. You'll be very happy with it.

A few questions for you to help narrow down your front speakers.

What type of music do you listen to?

What mix of HT/music do you plan on using your system for?

What, if any, subwoofer will you purchase (or do you own one)?

What is the size of your room?

Would you describe your room as neutral, bright, or dead?

Listen to mostly Rock,50/50 ht-music. The room is 12'x16',but because the fronts will be about 14' apart from each other I feel that towers would be a better option than book-shelves. As far as the room being bright, neutral or dead. I'm not really sure! The room has a large window (4'x8'), two door openings on opposite wall, one blank wall, door opening and stairs opposite the blank wall and finally a carpet floor.

I don't have a sub as of yet,but have been researching the SVS & Velodyne subs.

Consider the RTi12's with the SVS subwoofer.

Another option may be Paradigm towers if you can find them for a comparable price.

Since you mentioned that you listen to rock, you might be best to drive the speakers with a good 2-channel amp. Let the receiver drive the other speakers when you watch movies.

The 2500 will drive them nicely, but the Polks can handle quite a bit more. The RTi10's will take on a 300 watt per channel amp, and the RTi12's a 500 watt per channel amp. Your Yamaha as well as just about any other receiver will crap out before these Polks do.

There are many other tower speakers with higher spl levels that don't need an outboard amp if you prefer high volume levels.

That receiver is a great choice as was metioned before, I own the Yamaha RXV2500 and love it so far. I also own the RTI12's, csi5 center, rti4 bookselves for the rears, and the PSW505 450 watt subwoofer. My room is about the same as yours maybe alittle bigger and these speakers rock. This receiver definitely will drive them. I rattle all the windows in my house while watching movies. I'm still trying to fine tune it to sound even better. Also, the Polks will need about 100 hours of break in time before they actually start to really come alive. I have maybe 30 hours on mine and are supurb!!

Polk Audio
Rti 12’s 9 (front)
Rti 4’s (rear surround)
Csi 5 (center)
PSW 505 (subwoofer)
50” Sony Grand Wega LCD projection
Yamaha RXV2500 receiver
Sony DVP725P DVD player
Dish network 811 HDTV receiver
Sony Playstation 2

Thanks all, for ur input. I think RTi-12's would be good choice except that they are a bit out of my price range. I've also been considering the Axiom 60's which are about the same price as the Rti-10's. I just feel a little uncomfortable buying speakers without having listened to them first. I plan on going to Tweeter over the weekend and check out the RTi-10's,with any luck maybe I'll have a couple of new toy's to play with :D .
