Looks like the 1500 is a little older, has more power and cost a little more. The 659 is newer, has more bells and whistles and less power.

What are you trying to drive?

Either should be fine. I was concerned that the 659 wouldnt be enough for my system but it does a great job.

Save the money go with RX-V659, it is a great deal and has preouts for future upgrades. The only downside is the lack of HDMI, but the 1500 doesn't have that either. I assume you aren't concerned about HDMI anyway.:)

You can go on a speaker auditioning outing and see where it takes you. Bring some favorite music cd's and movie dvd's and head out to your area shops and have at it.
Have a realistic budget and focus on the front, center, sub and surrounds basically in that order if you do decide to upgrade but can not do it all at once. If movies are your primary venue over music you may want to start with the center channel.
As you see with my speakers and Greg's the 659 can power speakers from modest...mine hehehe...to high quality...Greg's.
Keep us informed.

Ok. i am looking at a few options:
1. Keep the jbl e80s at the front, and order a pair of axiom m3 v2 as surrounds and the vp100 v2 for center (get the m50 v2 towers later $$)or
2. get the athena AS speaker system (F1,B1,C1)
i have no clue about good subs i will rely on ur suggestions.
