Ok so I am running my front speakers and rear surround speakers off my receiver, and using the pre outs to a seperate amp to run my presence speakers. So 6 speakers in all. I went through the manual setup and set presence to YES and speakers to 6. While I'm in this setup screen the indicator lights on the face of the receiver indicate that I am running all 6 speakers, but once I am out of the setup screen the indicator lights for the presence and surround go out and just the fronts are lit up, yet all 6 speakers still play. So not really a serious problem, but I am just wondering how to make it so the indicator lights for the presence and surround speakers stay lit up once I'm out of the menu? I couldn't find anything searching althought I'm sure this must have been discussed before unless for some reason this is a glich in my receiver? Thanks for the help guys!!!

You can only use either the surround back or presence speakers at one time. Not sure if when you say "rear surround" you mean surround or surround back speakers. There is also a setting on the 2500 I use that has you choose between presence or surround back speakers. I imagine the 1500 is the same way. You may also want to try and press the "8" button on the units remote to turn off the extended surround (surround back) speakers, then you should notice the indicator light if a DSP mode is engaged. If you are not using one of the "Movie" modes, the indicator light still may not light up as the soundfield you are using will either take advantage of the presence channels or not.

The speaker display is generally only to indicate when the receiver is actually seeing a signal that has the rear channel encoded, which means it will only light up for EX or ES material. It is not an indicator of what speakers are being used. Using a DSP that simulates surround, say from a stereo signal, you are still only receiving a stereo signal, which has little to do with what the DSP is doing with that signal.

Yamaha speaker connections

Your yahama has more than enough power to run the presence spakers from the receiver. I have a lower model (5860) which also has the option of running surround back or presence speakers. An external amp is only need for low impedence, inefficient front channel speakers. Consider removing the amp or connecting it to your fronts. Keep in mind that the presence channels will only be active when running Yamaha DSPs.

Also, you should consider adding a center channel speaker. The center channel contains most of the dialog and is very important to movie soundtracks.

You are getting a lot of good advice, but the actual answer to your question is as stated by j_garcia's post:

The display just shows what channels of information are present in the source signal, and has nothing to do with what speakers are putting out sound, or are even connected.

If you have a two-channel source, then just the FL and FR lights are lit up. But, if you are using PLII or PLIIx, then your receiver is creating signals for the center, surrounds, rears if equipped, etc.

If you have a dolby digital 5.1 or DTS-encoded source, then the FL, FR, C, SL, and SR lights will be lit, indicating a 5.1 source.
