yamaha 1400 keeps turning off

I am in the install business and have installed many yamaha recievers on a
weekly basis and have never had a problem

mine has worked flawlessly for the entire time and now all of a sudden the reciever started turning itself off randomly, possibly more often at higher dbs...

the turn offs have started happening more often and i have checked all wiring time and time again
any ideas out there, any ideas would be appreciated.

Could there be a problem with one of the drivers (woofer, mid, tweeter) inside one of your speakers? Put a source on at low volume, then listen to each driver individually to make sure they all work, and don't sound fried. Sometimes a partially blown driver wil short out just enough to cause the amp to detect something is not right and shut down.

Clipping

Sounds like your clipping your receiver. The Yammie handles 8 ohm speakers with no problem. If you are driving 4 ohm speakers, when you get to an acion scene in a movie or if you play music at high db levels, the speakers will draw too much power and "clip" the receiver. Most newer receivers come with this safety feature.

What speakers are you using? Do you know the impedence?

thanks for your reply....

would it be strange for the system to run smoothly and then all of a sudden start doing this?

they are an older model of denon large cube, small box style speakers, model sc-53s, 6 ohm stated on back of speakers...

Well, if you keep your volume at exactly the same level, and all the components (DVD player, CD player, speakers, etc) are the same, then it might seem a little strange. But, the way you described your problem, it seems like a clipping issue. I have the 2400 and it was doing the same thing with JAMO D870s and D8CEN. They're both 4 ohms and my Yammie would shut down on action scenes with lots of explosions, etc. My 2400 has and impedence selector, which I set to 6, but it still kept clipping.

You can set your receiver's impedance to 6 ohms if you check page 23 of your owner's manual.

I'd try that before assuming any major problems exist in the receiver.

Good Luck.

Just a comment on the impedance switch on Yamaha receivers:

The low impedance setting of this switch (6 or 4 ohms, versus the 8 ohm setting) actually makes it more likely for clipping to occur. It minimizes the chance of thermal overload by selecting a lower voltage transformer tap, but this actually makes it more likely for clipping to occur during transient peaks, as the maximum power available is reduced.

You will minimize the chance of clipping by using the 8 ohm setting, even for 4 ohm speakers. You still need to watch out for thermal overload (overheating), but you will be able to handle high-power transients better.

Sound and Vision's review of the RX-V750 (100Wx7) had the following test results, taken at the start of clipping with the two L/R stereo channels driven:

Into 8 ohm load (switch set for 8 ohms) - 132 Wpc
Into 4 ohm load (switch set for 6/4 ohms) - only 102 Wpc
Into 4 ohm load (switch set for 8 ohms) - 243 Wpc

Absolutely agree on the impedance switch issue, Yamaha only gave it to comply with UL laws, keep it at 8ohms. You most likely have busted driver and most probably a tweeter in your center speaker.

more problems :(

thank you all for replying to my post....
however my problems with my 1400 have increased

after switching the ohm setting to 6 i noticed that my front right and left speakers were not sounding out on 7 ch stereo mode, so i switched to 2 channel or direct stereo and i was not getting them at all, no sound

so i disconnected the wires and doublechecked connections and test toned the speakers, they toned out just fine

i reconnected them and tried sending the tone via the yamaha test tone on screen menu and the front right and left would not tone out at all via the yamaha!

left me to believe that something must be wrong so i brought it to my neiborhood warrenty repair specialist and he told me there was an issue with the 1400s tricking themselves into overheat mode but that should not account for my loss of the front right and left channels, so we will see what magic he can perform

anybody know anything about this problem?
thanks to all

Sorry about your luck. I just wanted to comment on the overheating issue. I ran a whole 5.1 system of 4ohm speakers on my 1400 for months without it even breaking a sweat! The fan did come on a couple of times, but no protection mode of any kind.

My brother had the same problem... He had a bad rear surround speaker. Replaced it and has no problems...
