Hi All,

I've searched a bit and still can't find a definitive answer to this question.

Does the Xbox play movie DVD's at 480p or 480i?

I have my Xbox hooked up to my Sony KDF55-WF655 with the HD cable pack and gaming is awesome in widescreen. Games like Halo2 at 480p, and Amped 2 at 720p are outstanding. I also use my Xbox as a DVD player, and am wondering if it outputs 480p while playing movie DVD's, and if I would see a noticable improvement by buying a standalone DVD player, and at what price point the image quality would be worth it.

Thanks for the input

My system

Denon AVR-2805 receiver
Sony KDF55-WF655 LCD RPTV
Orb Audio Mod2 front, left & center speakers
Orb Audio subwoofer
PSB inwall surrounds (may change to more Orb Audios)
HiDef off air via antenna right now, soon to upgrade my Dish Network sat
system to HiDef receiver, continue to get local HiDef off air

When I bought my XBox (years ago) I looked into it, and was told that while it will play DVDs (with the special remote), they aren't shown in progressive scan. Seems a might peculiar, considering the 720p hype that some of the games are getting, eh?

Bryan...waiting for Prince of Persia II...

All but a handful of Xbox games are 480p, 720p, or 1080i. The Xbox is only capable of playing games in progressive. Microsoft was unwilling to pay the price for a progressive DVD playback chipset... considering the loss they sustain from Xbox sales, it's understandable. Most people that are serious enough about DVDs to have a progressive-capable display would probably buy a better DVD player anyway... Good selling feature though - perfect for dorm-living college students.

Thanks Nick.

I play Halo2 a lot, it's 480p and looks awesome. I also use my Xbox for a DVD player and the results look good, but I was wondering how much better DVD movies would look on a progressive scan DVD player, and if it would be worth it, (not so much money wise, but space in my component cabinet) to buy a standalone player.

Cheers

Yeah, I rented Call of Duty a while back. It is sweet. May have to buy that one. Have you checked out Men of Valor? I can't wait for the driving game Forza Motorsport to come out. If you go on Xbox live my gamertag is ElectricVooDoo.
