Would you buy a refurbished receiver?

I've never had any issues with refurbished electronics in the past, I just wanted some feedback from the rest of you.

I've purchased 2 denon receivers from ecost with no issues. The 2808ci I recently purchased was listed as refurbished, but when it arrived, it was new.
My only suggestion is to buy factory refurbished, not 3rd party refurbished, from an authorized dealer with a warranty.

I have no problems with buying refurbished. However, with receivers, you will want to make sure you are getting a new enough model to have the latest decoders and plenty of HDMI inputs. You don't want to buy something that is already so far out of date that you are wanting something it does not have.

It depends on from whom, who did the "refurbishing", and the warranty.

I've bought refurb Marantz, Onkyo and KEF from Accessories4less and will continue to do so. They are authorized dealers for what they sell and only sell factory refurbed and factory waranted units.

But, then again, nothing I've bought from them ever needed service.

I bought a refurbished Onkyo 706 from accessories4less about a month or so ago. The first one had a problem after a few days (blew a cap) but there are threads about this rare issue and it also has happened to new ones so I do not feel the refurb aspect was at issue.

I called accessories4less and they sent a FedEx shipping tag at their expense and shipped me another 706 the SAME day I shipped the defective one back. That’s about as good as it gets.

Also speaking to Onkyo’s refurbishing, both the units I received would pass for brand new. Plus the only thing I didn’t get in the box were batteries for the remote.

So yes, I'd do it again without hesitation.

I personally would not buy an Onkyo because they do not include the original DPL, so they cannot properly decode any of the old DPL stuff. Many people, however, do not care about proper decoding, and are fine with DSP that is not decoding the original material, so they are happy using DPL II (or DPL IIx) with DPL encoded material.

Also, a few people are very unhappy with that model; see:

I personally would probably go with Yamaha, which, in fact, is what I have done the last two times I purchased a surround receiver. Of course, you will find many here who like Onkyo and will tell you to go ahead and buy Onkyo.

I think the harman audio store or accessories4less are the best way to get a receiver. They both have great deals that can't be beat.

If it's factory refurbished with factory warranty, and significant discount, YES. I'm talking about 35-40% discount from what you can it for new, as the minimum discount. Otherwise, I'll just buy new. I have had many refurbished electronics in the past 15 years. They have been just as reliable, and usually visually indistinguishable, from 'new' units. I tend to avoid non-factory refurbished items, however.

As for accessories4less that has been mentioned, I have only positive experiences from their customer service. Highly recommended.

I noticed accessories4less has a TX-SR805 for about $650, but it's the silver model.

In the last three years, I've bought:

refurbished pre/pro
refurbished mch amp
refurbished receiver acting as HT pre/pro
superceded integrated (40% off)

My stuff also includes used, b-stock, demo, and open box.

There is no way anyone would be able to tell by looks, nor performance. Ok, my receiver has a "refurbished sticker" on the back of it. I think it might say something like "factory reconditioned", but not sure.

So, I say go for it. However, it's too bad that's the best price on an 805 right now. Mine was less than that over a year ago.

My receiver, tape deck, dvd player, and PS2 are used too, and I haven't had any trouble with them, except for the tape deck. It stopped playing tapes, so I have to get it repaired.

Enjoying my factory refurb Marantz

I'm enjoying my Marantz 7001 factory refurbished unit purchased from accessories4less. No problems so far after almost 2 months.

I bought my Onkyo 805 new from Amazon and a year later it had a bad solder joint, so I sent it in with a note to update the firmware from 1.6 to 1.8 fix the display issue by installing a bigger capicitor fuse (from .25 to 1 watt) and to check other none issues. I got it back from an authorized service center with all issues fixed and some I didn't know. Sure I consider it a refurbished unit now, but it works great, so as long as the it's an authorized refurbished unit, go for it.

Have you ever had a problem with it running excessively hot?

i've bought two av recievers from the h/k site on ebay. One arrived perfect and worked perfect. The other sustained some shipping damage. Sent h/k a note and they sent me an RMA and sent out another unit. Both came with 2 year factory warranties and have performed flawlessly. So I'd say.. go for it.

Because 9 times out of ten people do not properly ventilate their receiver. It's a huge problem and what causes most of the issues people have with receivers and amplifiers. People think 1 to 2 inches is sufficient for ventilation which is just plain idiotic. Onkyo even puts a warning sticker on the top right corner of their receivers letting people know that they run warm. Yet people still shove them into racks with little to no ventilation.

I would venture to guess that over 60% percent of the systems I look at in various galleries do not have their receivers properly ventilated.

At the price some people paid ($400), they can afford to buy another one, after it's gone up in smoke. :D
I'm just kidding; in case someone take me seriously. ;)

^ Here's a smart answer. :) I totally agree with that.

* By the way, I got about 6" of space on top of my 805, without an additional fan; and it's running just great. A bit hot, but just the way I like it. :)
If I would have only a few inches of space, I will add a small 4" external fan on the top right rear corner (viewed from the front).

I love my 805, keeps me warm and all cozy. Wife loves it too. :)

My 506 has about 7 inches above it and it runs warm. Especially around the video section and HDMI inputs. Funny thing is the amp sectin is not all that warm.
