So I'm an amateur when it comes to all this, but very interested in slowly building up my home theater system!

To get things started, here is my current speaker set-up (2.1).

Two Klipsch RF-82 Floor Speakers, max input power of 150 watts
One Klipsch KSW-12 Subwoofer

I asked my dad to run to BestBuy on his way to work and grab the Sony STRDN 1080, however, he came home with the Denon AVRS 740H because a salesman said it was the better receiver.

They're both $499.99 CAD. I'd post the links, but the site won't let me since I'm new! (they're bestbuy canada).

I've watched reviews on the Sony 1080, and the general consensus was that it was great (especially as it comes with a mic to auto-configure your system). Whereas the Denon uses a naming convention that I am unfamiliar with (i.e. Denon 740H vs 3400H), and I simply just can't find solid reviews about it.

So could you y'all give me your input? Should we return the Denon and grab the Sony? Or was the Denon a better bang for our buck? I don't plan on adding more speakers for a while.

p.s. I am familiar with the fact that my Klipsch speakers are a bit outdated, and are more bass-heavy than neutral :)

TLDR: Which is better for a 2.1 system featuring two Klipsch RF 82 floor speakers and a sub?

Sony STRDN 1080 or Denon 740H?

Well I don't know either specific receiver but Denon is better than Sony when it comes to receivers.

I have been using the X3400H in a two channel system for a week now and in my opinion, at $745 (priced matched at BB) it is a better buy than the Sony.

The Onkyo 720 or 820 would be better than either of those for your needs. Both are on sale for about the same price as what you're looking at.

FWIW the Audyssey MultEQ system the Denon uses for auto-configuration (and should have come with a mic) is probably a bit better than the Sony's DCAC.

Bigger question is which feature set in which avr suits your needs best overall? They're more similar than different except for a few features....

I think the Denon.

My opinion is that the Denon will have better amp performance and much better room EQ (Audyssey) than the Sony and almost all brands in the same price class.

In Direct Mode, they should sound about the same with the same speaker and Sub levels.

I think the only thing that MIGHT go against Denon is possibly less reliability compared to Yamaha and Sony, especially Sony ES that offers 5YR warranty.
