While talking about home theaters with my brother the other day. He said that he had some speakers that belonged to my late grandfather just sitting around the house. My brother also said if I was interested he would ship them to me.

After speaking more in depth to my brother about the speakers he indicated that the speakers in question were ENERGY VERITAS I SERIES, which after investigating online sounds like a hell of a speaker.

My question is this. Right now I have yammi 5840 with a full Klipsch quintet III set up including the SUB 10. Would I be able to incorporate the Energy speakers into the setup acting as my two mains? Right now I am only running 5.1 sound and I believe my yammi supports 6.1 if this is true then couldn't I just move one of my Quintet's for back surround.

Wife doesn't know it yet but with the energy speakers coming on board, I have already started looking for a better center channel made by energy. So if anyone could give me a heads up on what would be good for the setup it would be appreciated.

Thanks,
Jeff

Veritas are pretty nice, but the 5840 won't have enough oomph to drive them adequately IMO.

Get them and try them out. Their free.

If your receiver doesnt push them good enough, then you can always go and buy a cheap 200watt amp.

edit: Just saw your post. What's your budget? Amps can range from $100 to $10k+.

Budget

Cheap, as I want to get a better center channel to go with the speakers

If you want cheap cheap, You'll have to go to Ebay.
Personally, I stay away from the consumer electronics section and do the Musical Instruments> Pro Audio> Power Amplifiers section. It seems like you can get more watts per $, with similar distortion. IMHO Prosumer > Consumer.

Your milage may vary. Read up on the amp before you buy 1. Also, you could make a post in the amp's section of the msgboard. There are always good suggestions there.

My preferred brands are Carver, Crown, Yamaha, and Ashly.

Sorry, I definitely wasn't implying that you shouldn't get them, that's a given :)

Does the 5840 have preamp outs? They will play with the 5840, but if you're going to look to crank it up, I'd be concerned about frying tweeters. If it has preamp outs, there are a number of inexpensive options for amps, such as the Behringer A500 that is just $180 and should be plenty to drive them.

Guys, his receiver has no preouts.

You would probly be able to driver them in stereo, but they would not get enough power in 5 or 6.1

I would get them now, and run them on your B channels(stereo only) when your not using your A channels. I would get a newer receiver when it becomes practical in the future, but KEEP THEM.

You are lucky, those are my favorite speakers, and your getting them for free :)

Treat them well.

A new Receiver? WAF is going to take a dump

Can someone give me a list of receivers that would be able to drive these speakers without an extra amp. Please keep the price reasonable.

Thanks

.....Jeff, you're trying every way you can to not delve into dedicated slave amp channels....this is a move you should want to make, and will be glad you did....I believe the Behringer A500 would be a great add for the fronts....Sheep mentioned your receiver didn't have pre-outs....you can always get the left and right pre-amped signals from the headphone jack........
