Would it help if we carried pictograms?

That was funny.:D

Then I noticed the writer of the story used a license printed in French....which is exactly the reason for the request to carry an international license.

Yeah, a Quebec license. I know some French, but I think it would be pretty easy for anyone to decipher it. Or, it should be pretty easy...

Yeah, the license was in French, but completely "usable".... I guess they're afraid that those silly northerners are gonna try to clean up the streets or something. Let that poor little Canadian go.

What I find funny is that Florida is requiring this from the wonderful people above us (and other places) but our neighbors to the south can move right on in without identification of any kind. And they ARE a serious threat.

I think the problem in Florida are Haitians and Cubanos LOL, not quite as many Mexicans as the western US.

Don't know about filling gas, but back in 1999 I used internationally issued VISA credit card here in US and don't recollect any issues. I was accepted anywhere where VISA cards were accepted

I was a bit puzzled by that one as well. I've never had a problem with my VISA card in the US.

Some of it is obvious, while other parts may not have a US equivalent.
For example, 'N de refence: PBMH92V70' along with the 'Class:5' and 'Cond:A' those are numbered on the Canadian License as 5, 9 & 12

I'm guessing those fields are defined clearly on an International License?
Our countries seem very similar, especially the press/news. They both seem quite adept at promoting utter bull **** and calling news.:D

That's hilarious, of course they'll need to spend millions on training the LEO's on how to read the international ones.

With regards to using a VISA at gas stations, YES it is a problem, really bad in some areas. It's only a problem if you pay at the pump as it asks for your zip code and no, you can't fake it as the zip code must match your address associated with the card.

I'm picturing a boardroom full of American suits laughing hysterically at the VISA office as they come up with that plan... "We'll make it mandatory to put in a zip!" "HAHA" "What are ya gonna do now, Eh?" "HAHAHAHAHA"

It has nothing to do with VISA and all about the POS, Point of Sale in this case ;), software used.

Actually, I don't see this policy as being as ridiculous as the report makes it out to be. That reference number would just be a registration number for tracking purposes. Here in NS, it's called a "Master Number". Where I see a valid reason for the IL, is for defining the license class. I don't know if a similar convention is followed in the US, but up here the license class determines the type(s) of vehicle a person is permitted to drive. A Class 5 license in NS permits you to drive "cars, pick-up trucks, sport utility vehicles and vans having a seating capacity of less than 24" according to the NS government website. But the back of my license says: "License Class: 5 - Single vehicle or combination (<14,000kg)". I'd call that a bit cryptic. My license is Class 5A, which means I am licensed to drive a motorcycle as well. At least the back of the license is clear on that one: "Endorsements: A - Any motorcycle".

So, if US states don't follow the same convention, I wouldn't expect any cop to be able to tell what type of vehicle a foreigner is allowed to drive.
