worth upgrading dvd player before HD versions are out?

Right now I have a JVC XV-N512S

http://www.jvc.com/product.jsp?modelId=MODL027225&pathId=10&page=1

It was the best DVD player I could get about a year or two ago, needed to upgrade b/c my dumb Sony HTIB (<-- P.O.S.) can't decode Dolby Digital, so I picked this dvd player up and have been happy with it. I know there are better ones out there now, but is it worth it to upgrade before HD players come out, no matter which version. I don't listen to DVD-A or SACD so I'm not concerned about that, but if I upgraded to a higher end dvd player am I going to get a significant gain in video and audio quality, or should I just wait?

thanks in advance for the advice

Well certainly not in audio quality if you are using a digital connection. You're receiver is handling the decoding on audio. Video is another issue however and for that exact $180 bucks I bought a Samsung unit that is universal and has DVI output. Until there is a universal player for High Def DVD (probably 2 or 3 years away) I am not going to lock myself into one format or another. I think folks that know any better are sick of format wars. The general public typically does not know any better until it is too late and they get burned.

I am in much the same situation, and have read many of these "should I wait" type of threads. I don't think that the format war is going to be decided very soon, and even if it is who knows the prices that will be charged for some of these players. For my situation, I have decided that I could get a decent upgrade in video (and audio, as I am into hi-rez music) quality for around $250. And for that money, I would be enjoying better sounding music and better looking movies until this thing is hashed out and prices level off a bit.

Cheers.

So that's where I'm confused, what makes the video of one dvd player better than another. If I invest more money to get a new one, what will be the differences, is HD upconversion going to give me visable results? Is a 7.1 analog out something I should look for to give better audio quality or digital fine?

Regardless of which new format takes dominance, I'm sure you'll be keeping your existing DVD library for quite some time.

I'd get a DVD player with an upscaler/image processor to make the best of your current standard-definition DVDs and nice Mitsubishi HDTV. Look for a player with the Faroudja DCDi processor to clean up your video and make it more presentable on your bigscreen.

The discrete multichannel audio outputs are only important if you listen to SACD or DVD-Audio discs because this data can't be sent through a standard digital connection. Its better to use a digital connection for everything else, so that your receiver handles all the audio processing instead of just acting as an amplifier.

Thanks for the Info. Maybe I'll have to budget a new DVD player into the system.
