I have a Cerwin Vega CLS-15 and I was wondering if it is worth shipping it out to Orange County Speaker to have it reconed. Ideally I'd like to take this opportunity to upgrade, but I refuse to buy anything but the PB-13 and as I'm going through a divorce right now, that could be quite some time and I can't be completely deprived of bass during this hard time. :(

A little information about the condition of the speaker. It still produces sound, actually fairly well, until higher volumes (say -20 on my Denon) and then it distorts heavily. When I took the speaker out of the box for a visual inspection, I notice when I push the cone in and out it makes a terrible scratching noise. Since this inspection I haven't used it again as I do not want to cause any more damage to the woofer.

So, bottom line, is it just "blown" and if so, what is exactly the definition of "blown"? The CLS-15 cost me about 400 dollars and when it was working properly I was thoroughly satisfied with it. So would it be worth the 75-85 dollar fee + shipping to have it reconed? All advice is welcome, thanks :D

Your driver has gap rub. This has been caused by burning the voice coil by over driving, or unraveling of the voice coil also from over driving.

The other possibility is that a sudden loud peak caused the voice coil to leave the gap, and the voice coil former became deformed as it returned to the gap.

Whatever the cause, your best bet is reconing. Orange County do excellent work.

One word of caution, if the driver voice coil is burned then the sub amp needs checking for DC off set. It may be sending DC to the speaker when driven hard and burning the voice coil.
