Wood damaged by heat?

Hi guys, its been a while since my last post. I bought my first sub with your recommendations. SVS PB12-Plus2 Piano Black.

Today I saw a grand piano sitting near a hot air duct (like the ones you have in your homes from the furnace), and the heat from the duct seems to have done some damage to the wood of the piano. All the gloss is starting to flake and chip.

My sub is kept about 2feet away from a hot air duct in my house, and i was wondering will the same thing happen to my sub over time? Is there anything i can do to prevent it?

thanks.

I would imagine that over time the hot air will damage the speaker, though two feet isn't bad. The air from your duct is hot and dry and will suck the moisture from any wood. Other than moving it away from the direct air coming out of the vent not sure what could be done to protect it. If moving it isn't possible could you block the air or redirect it at all. I know you can get little covers that will force the air "out" into the room as apposed to "out to the sides".

Humidity, constant temperature changes, heat are all bad for wood products.

Another thing i've found to be helpful in keeping the wood in good shape is simply being diligent about keeping the wood well oiled. A light application of furniture oil has keep the wood on my speakers in great shape and a couple of them are very near the heat boards in my theater room. I'm not sure what the care recommendations for a piano gloss finish are though so I'd check with the manufacturer first before going this route.
