i have a old sony bdp-s370 and thinking about upgrading it to an oppo 103. too, i just got my first avr, a denon x3000 recently.

from what i've been reading here it doesn't make sense to buy a CD player? seems the advice is to rip them to flac over to a media server these days.

my question is, i can scrap my old cd player and if i wanted i can use the oppo to play a cd but in the meantime rip my cd's over to my media server. the avr-x3000 can play the files from the media server or a cd from the oppo, right?

You can scrap you old cd player but you probably should keep the BDP-S370. People are still asking for a lot of money for the S370,380,390. They can play SACD and decode multichannel lossless internally. The S370 can be a back up for the 103. Yes, the AVR-X3000 can stream files from you PC but the 103 can also do it and will likely do a better job.

With player like Oppo 103 you wont need separate CD player. And yes you can use media server to stream your music as well.

I agree, you can ditch the CD player. That BDP will inevitably become your go-to player for just about everything.

Have fun.

I've got a soft spot for CD players. A good quality CD player with lightning fast que and near silent mechanics can make a high fidelity system more seamless in a 2 channel only setup. If the room this is being used in constantly has levels of noise be it fans, noise from kitchen appliances, return from the furnace, etc., then you probably won't mind a little extra mechanical noise from your disc spinner.

In my apartment the only "quiet room" is the bedroom and that's where my main CDP is and will probably remain there until I move.

The Oppo is quieter than anything i've ever owned, bu sure, if OP has a 2000$ cd player, that would likely change my answer... I'm assuming a device of a few hubdred bucks, and decade old, like most.

Guess I should have asked...

You will run the media server through the OpPo TOO. eVERYTNING WILL GO THROUGH THE oPPO.
