Hello,

This is my first post so please be gentle. I purchased an Onkyo NR801 over the weekend (end of year model sale at circuity city). One of the features that I liked was something they call "nettune". It allows you to stream stuff from your computer (MP3) to the receiver. The trouble is that it's not wireless. It requires an ethernet cable. Since my computer and receiver are at opposite ends of the house it is not practical for me (girlfriend said no) to run a CAT5 cable.

I am thinking that there has to be a "wireless" soulution to this problem. Any advice would be appreciated.

Best regards,
Phil

Sounds like you'll want to look at a Roku Soundbridge, Squeezebox2, or others that are similar. You may also just look at a wireless hub and receiver for your PC (which is basically what the others are for about the same price, but a lot more features).

The cheapest route would be a wireless router and wireless network card for your computer. Most wireless routers come with up to 4 "wired" ports...you can hook one of those up to your receiver. Put the wireless card in your computer and you're in business. You should be able to pick up a combo like this for less than $100.

The Squeezebox is nice, as are some other wireless options, but most of them aren't really taken advantage of unless you already have a wireless router/switch. Plus they'll run you more money (the squeezebox starts around $180).

Thank you both for your answers. I admit i am looking for the cheapest route. My computer is hard wired into a wireless router. What component do i need to purchase to pull down the wireless signal and feed it into the reciever?

Thanks again,
Phil

If you already have a wireless router, this or something like it, may be all you need then.

If the goal is to use the NetTune client in the receiver wirelessly, then none of the wireless media adapters or devices like the Squeezebox will do what you want. Those are for streaming wirelessly from the computer to the adapter/Squeezebox and then the adapter/Squeezebox connects to the stereo using standard analog (or digital in the case of Squeezebox) audio interconnects.

If you have a wired/wireless router then you need a wireless bridge to use the receiver. The receiver is connected to the bridge via an ethernet cable and then the bridge will communicate wirelessly to the router (which in turn can address any of the computers hard wired to it).

Doh, forgot about the fact that the Onkyo has built in browse capability. Then all you need is something like this.

Guys,

Thank you so much for you rapid replies. I got a linksys WET54G on Ebay for $71. List at Staples is $150. Onkyo support says that will work just fine. Again, i appreciate your help. I wish there was a board like this for all of lifes' problems!

Best regards,
Phil
