I have a harmankardon dpr1005 running polk audio rti150 fronts the center is a csi5 and the rears are polk in walls. Im looking to spend some of my tax check to get a sub and also was thinking abouthaddind the emotiva lpa1 amp ( I think thats the model number, its 500) . I guess Im asking will this make a difference? I really like to crank it up.

thanks, thats the other thing im deciding on but all the choices make it impossible. I was going to spend 1200 on a sub but now I may just spend about 6 to 700. I have a thread i just posted about the earthquake sub. I hardly hear anyone talk about them on here. I can get the earthquake mkiv 12 shipped for 600. Is this a good deal. Im so cunfused on what to get. I really wanted the av123 new subs but dont wanna wait till april to get it

The LPA-1 will push just about anything you throw at it. But as was already said, if you pick up an HSU or SVS sub, you probably won't need that much juice. On the other hand, you can never have to much power :D

in that case... sub over amp for me.

700 dollar sub + amp
or
1200 dollar sub

1200 dollar sub for me.
the PC13 Ultra should be ready by march :)

I'm with Mike. A sub will have a profound effect on the sound of your system. The amp will probably have no effect at all. It could only have an effect if what you are using now is failing to drive the speakers without distortion.

Upgrades

I have the LPA-1 and recommend it, but our current speakers are not a perticularly difficult load, so maybe the electronics upgrade is not what you are looking for.

Upgrade the sub or posibly the L/C/R channels with the LSi series.

If upgrades to LSI series , he will probably have to upgrade to a bigger amp :) . But that will pay off , the LSI series need Big power to sound full , but hell of a speaker .

Does it need more power than it draws? What is Big power and how does it differ from little power?

Hehe
LSI are 4 ohm speaks , They sound hollow in the mids and midbass , if not powered properly . They are similar that way to my SDA's , they love the Power :) . Mind you a tube amp will do it at lower levels :) .

How would they differ from other 4 ohm speakers that aren't powered properly?

For sound levels, yes an amplifier will help you out.

Just make sure you watch your speakers closer when you are pushing them harder so you don't blow them. ;)

i guess if I blow them then it gives me a reason to upgrade! yea...anyway I just got the earthquake mkiv-12 for 598 shipped brand new. Hopw it was a good deal. Now I think Ill get the emo amp and upgrade to one of there processors when they come out this year. my dpr1005 some of the optical and coax inputs lose signal once in a while. Did I get a good deal guys on the sub? I think Im on the right track now

I dont know what other 4 ohm speaker your talking about . The LSI polk series , Can hand large volumes of clean power , the more power you give them , the better they sound . Do some research on them @ PolkAudio forums , they are a pretty good speaker , while you are there go to the Vintage section and look up the SDA series , these can take hords of power to , the better also the SDA series .
Do your own DD FMW , i just gave you where to look or better yet go buy some and try them out :) and swap some power amps and see what you think .

Even so, it's advisable (at least by me) to at least watch your speakers carefully the first time they are going louder than they have been, as well as constantly listening for any degragation in sound quality.

Some speakers can take lots of punishment, but they still can blow :)

As long as you like the final product , looks like a good price on the sub ( thats a monster sub :)) . Audiogone has one for $695.00 new .

Seriously, I have no life.
..., the more power you give them , the better they sound . .
Actually, that will make them sound louder, and at some point, it will start to compress and sound terrible.

Are those the speakers with cables also running between speakers? Something about canceling out phase something? They made me dizzy and spatially disorienting.

Actually, it was a rhetorical question. I was just trying to understand whether or not you know what you are talking about.
