Will this adapter work with JL Audio head unit? I'm new to subs!

I want to get a JL Audio 12"w0v3 subwoofer with box ($250 from local dealer), a 360 watt Jl audio amp ($180), and a new head unit.
I want a JL Audio head unit to keep all the brand the same, but I have a 2008 Pontiac Grand Prix with steering wheel controlling of radio and all the audio such as low gas warnings, etc go through the stereo system. This means my car apparently has weird wiring and stuff for all that stuff. So my local sub dealer said it would cost me about $400 for them to install a new head unit to a new aftermarket one while keeping all the stock features such as volume control from steering wheel. I think thats a little expensive! So I found out I can apparently get an adapter and thus install all this stuff myself and keep all the features such as steering wheel control. Here's the adapter...

This adapter says it is compatible with all radios that have an IR remote operating range of 38-40 Khz.
Do JL Audio head units have this? Or are they not compatible with this? If need be, I'll just go buy a pioneer head unit instead and use an adapter compatible with a pioneer head unit.

So basically all I want to do is get a sub for my car for some good bass. But I need a new head unit because my stock radio doesn't support settings for a sub. I don't want to pay all this money to dealership so I'm trying to find an alternative. I am completely new to subs and am just getting into this stuff. I still don't know how to install them yet! So any help in lame mans terms would be appreciated as I need some info because I don't want to spend hundreds of extra dollars to get this stuff installed by someone else when me and a friend who knows how to install subs can do it ourselves.

does your car have Onstar and/or a Bose sound system ?

if you do,the bose/onstar and steering wheel control adapters can be quite expensive and so will the install prices.

and keeping the head unit the same brand as the sub will not do much for sound quality,or anything for that matter.

I am not familiar with Jl head units,so I don't know if that head unit will accept a SWC,
I put in JL amps and woofers all the time though,

if you don't have bose or onstar it will be easy to add an external sub amp,

if I was you ,I would either get a kenwood or pioneer head unit with "sub out", or
keep the OEM head unit and get an amp like this with a remote bass control knob. it has an external bass control, speaker level input(as well as rca)

also, this steering wheel adapter is easy to install and better performing IMO,I put in these and PAC,I think they work better

the MTX amps come with a control like this that you mount in front by the radio to control the bass amp

I just checked the JL website, and I don't see where they make headunits. Where are you seeing any headunits made by JL?
