Will this act as an absorber?

Hey,

I was helping my pa do a work move, and he had this foam that was shaped like an egg carton. Its not styrofoam, and its not the swedish sleep magic foam, its just weird foam. I was wondering If I could use it to get rid of some nasty treble reflections I'm having behind my listening position. I will include a pic so your not confused by my "description". ;)

I think it'd work just fine. If not, toss it! It'll only help with the treble, if anything. It won't absorb a thing in the midrange to bass.

Ok, But NO midrange? I can understand bass, but I need it to suck up higher mid aswell.

Unfortunately, I don't have alot, but I will see what this does.

Thanks

Perhaps that was exaggeration. It'll prolly hit the upper midrange, but I still don't think it'll do too much. Just guessing though. One of these days I'm going to follow Mr. Nomas/Andry/OPRA's lead and build some of my own panels.

I'm doing those after christmas. Pa's getting a miter saw so it will be easier. The stuff used to absorb might be a little expensive.

This is probably low-density packing foam. This will not absorb much other than treble due to it's low density. However, if you only need some acoustic foam(and cosmetic are not important), you can get some NRC certified, medium grade(2 lb./ft^3 density) acoustic foam for low $$ on ebay.

You might find it in a local pro music store that sells studio supplies(be sure it is NRC certified, they might be selling packing foam). But it will cost alot more for the same amount of material.

Ok, I found a website that ship, and the prices seem ok.

Its basically the stuff you showed me on ebay. 6 pieces 2 x 4 feet sounds good.

Sheep,

> I was wondering If I could use it to get rid of some nasty treble reflections <

Doubtful. That looks like cheap non-acoustic foam. Watch out on eBay too, because the particular vendor cited above was caught (by me) selling inferior foam with fraudulent data. I bought and measured their foam in an acoustics lab, and it came up far short of their claims. If you're intent on using foam, as opposed to something made from rigid fiberglass which is much better, stick with a legit brand such as Auralex or Sonex.

I am planning on making rigid fiberglass stuff later

I was just wondering if foam works too, as making frames and all that poop is more work.

That is shameful. Did you contact ebay and provide the data to them?

Sheep,

Alas, there's no free lunch. You can buy excellent panels and avoid doing any work, or you can save money and make your own and get similar (or likely a little less) performance.

Chris,

Yes, it is shameful. But as a sort-of competitor it's not appropriate for me to report them. Plus, I can't for the life of me imagine that eBay cares even a little. By the way, if you're curious about how much disparity there is between what Foam By Mail claims and reality, that data is on the Product Data page of my company's web site. FBM claims identical specs to Auralex, which we also measured ourselves in a lab, and both are shown side by side in a table and in a graph.

Yeah, I'm not paying $240 dollars for something that cost <$30 dollars to make. Its rediculous what they charge for absorbers.
