will progressive scan make a big diff?

i have a old sony vsp400 series dvd player without prog scan. should i purchase a newer player with prog scan or will it not be worth it. i have a sony proj hdtv.

I think you should see a difference on a projector TV. But, parhaps you have a friend with one you can borrow first? Or, a loaner from th estore?

Considering that you can get a prog scan DVD player for probably under $100, you probably should. IMO, the jump from interlaced to progressive is the biggest visual difference short of the jump from SD to true HD.

i noticed a pretty good difference when I went from a non progressive scan to a pro scan on my 57" CRT rear projection TV, well worth the $150 i spent on the DVD player

Yes, it's not going to be the WOW factor you saw going from VHS to DVD. It's more subtle but at today's prices you might as well. Do you have an HD signal connected to your HDTV? If not you will see a much bigger difference going from an SD to HD picture.

what do you mean by hd signal? do you mean hd box from my cable company, if so no i dont. ill be watching mostly dvd movies and im debating on buying a player with it or waiting till later when hi def dvd player comes out. to much stuff comes out so fast that i cant keep up. everything cost too damn much to keep up with technology.

I'm not familiar with your DVD player but any of the current progressive scan DVD players from the major manufacturers under $100 should work. But if you really want to see a great picture get the HD box from your cable company. There is a lot of content in HD now available including most of the primetime shows from the four major networks. If you are a football fan the live feeds on SNF and MNF look amazing.

progressive scan isn't super WOW, but with it you will be watching a movie and like 20 min in you will be like "DAMN, that is a good looking picture" I think it is worth the $75-$100 for a new player. The new $100 progressive players also have a lot of the cooler features now too. So I say it is worth it.

and if your cable company offers HD then get it. usually it is like $3 to $8 extra a month. I even got one with a built in DVR for under $10 a month. It is awesome.

I have to disagree with some of the comments, I think prog scan was a pretty sizable jump. Definately not like VHS to DVD, or SD to HDTV, but a BIG jump none the less. Really, for the price of a few cables you can get a brand new prog. scan DVD player. Well worth it. On my TV (52" RCA RPTV) the jump to progressive scan did miracles for the edges of objects, the detail in hair and just generally looked a lot better. If you just look at the words in movies (like in star wars in the beginning.....in a universe far far away....) how straight and clear the edges of the letters of each word are on prog. as compared to interlaced is very noticable.
