Most but not all extended warranties are Pure Bunk

Good that it worked for you however extendex warranties are usually a way to suck up more money from the consumer and there have been several articles and alerts on it.
Yes and no. It depends on the complexity of the product and the cost of repair/replacement compared to the warrnaty cost. A blanket statement such as yours is misleading. Some, maybe even many, extended warranties are not needed and do not really payout.

I just bought a PRO151-FD which comes with a two year warranty (most only have a one year warranty). I extended the warranty to 5 years in home service for complete parts and labor for $599. Before you think that is too high, you might want to research the cost of repairing a HD TV. I recently replace the power supply on a Misubishi 55" and it cost $550; it was about 4 1/2 years old.

But in defference to your statement, I agree with you a lot of extended warranties are overpriced and do not provide you much return . Caveat Emptor --- read the warranty carefully! ........ especailly if you get a blind call that your car warranty is about to expire and they have no idea what type of car you have.

Concerning quality and warranty Hunter fans. I had a remote hunter fan that quite working after about 5 1/2 years. The remote receiver unit is easily replaceable; I repalced it and it still didn't work. I called Hunter and told them the sysmptoms; replace remote receiver and light works, but fan does not. fan unit clicks when I select fan speeds. First they are sneding me an new remote receiver and transmitter and if that doesn't fix it ( which I don't think it will becuase I have 8 of the same fans installed and 2 remote receivers have failed in 5 1/2 years) they will send me a new fan motor. Pretty good --limited lifetime warranty.

--- Or my sun hose cart which is now about 15 years old and they have replaced parts free no questions asked.

Sometimes it all lies in the quality you buy up front --for example I won't buy any yard equipment that isn't Honda or Husqvarna --- it just outlast the others

Same with AVR ---- Marantz ;)

Be just to be safe on my Pioneer Kuro Elite --- extended warranty that will pay for itself completely if only needed once. Great cost perfomance !

Shoulda checked out SquareTrade. They can warranty most anything and typically have much more reasonable rates vs. the seller.

MC these are very wise words. It all depends on the product. Though I've heard of warranties on lawn mowers that only are valid if it's used in a rainstorm in Africa. So watch yourself.

All extended warranties are insurance. And one of my financially savvy friends suggest you insure everything. Period. He says that most folks don't have enough discipline to insure themselves. That means setting aside the cost of an extended warranty into savings for every product you buy. And then using that to account to fund repairs. If you lack that discipline. You should buy any good value extended warranty. If you are disciplined you can really protect yourself financially. Insurance is the key to being safe and surviving bad stuff.

Start by saving 6 months of your take home income in a savings account.

Extended warranties are insurance. Usually the premium is a really bad deal and the fine print on the agreement is sickening when it's not a manufactures extended warranty. I just use my credit card to pay, which doubles the manufacturer's warranty. I know a lot of credit cards do that on electronics. Most retailers will give you an extra year warranty for free if you push for it.

Reminds me of when my mom bought a laptop. I found one that would suit her needs for $350 because she only used the net and is on a fixed income. When we were at the store I walked about 50ft away when I thought it was all done and the salesman talked her into a 5 year warranty for $300, a crappy case for $75, a crappy printer for $100 and a USB cable for $30. The total was something like $900. I had a long talk with her and got most of it returned, thank goodness.

Yeah, warranties ROCK!

I always buy my extended warranties straight from the manufacture, not from the store I bought the product from.

This tends to be a safer bet that it will be honored, and is usually cheaper.
I've known a lot of people who got suckered into best buy, and circuit city extended warranties, and got burned.

I figure that the money I save on extended warranties will pay for the gadget that finally fails. :)

Since I couldn't afford the extended warranty, I bought Panasonic. :)
