I remember in the late 1990:-2005 aiwa , sound and all main brands sold tons of shelf systems some were junk others high end and costed a lot.
Why were these scrapped for soundbars and home theater Ina. Box with satellites?

They were hardly theater quality but a lot of bang for buck .
I have a picture of my old Sony surround amp

I dont think all that many connected them to the tv sets. The tv’s themselves didnt sound so bad back then compared to systems like shown, tv sound really went down the drain with flatter screens so ppl started buying HTIBs and soundbars to regain what they lost with a newer tv.

They were essentially a Avr for entry level users to practice with haha . Mine only has 3 dsp modes , Dolby digital does not work without 5.1 channels input anolog which does not exist .
Modern tv speakers are Terrible with exception of a few flagship models . The Sony with built in mini woofers.

Meh, none of these were ever really good, but at least they were convenient and fairly prevalent.

Here is the modern equivalent, likely the ones from Denon and Yamaha are decent.

I wouldn't call those shelf systems particularly....mini component systems maybe. Mini stacks perhaps. Never found them particularly desireable but never owned one.

Some were high end and hifi ,majority of them weren’t too impressive. I guess they were in style then extinct so quickly :
Avr are like far superior to them .
