Why the need for hdmi through your receiver?

Hey guys, new here and I hope not be asking an idiotic question but why the necessity to run all your equipment through the hdmi connections of the receiver?

Can you not just run your equipment (blu ray player or ps4 and such) through the tv hdmi and just run the tv to the receiver via optical? Will the receiver not receive the information the same way?

That is how I have mine run even though I have like 5 hdmi ports on the receiver.

Am I losing something or is this basically the same thing?

Thanks for the help.

No, the tv is not a good receiver. It won't pass any lossless codecs and may not even pass more than 2.0. The receiver is a superior switching device generally as well, especially if a tv isn't involved....

Lovinthehd already put in a good answer but I can't pass this up since back before I joined the AH I also thought about such issues. If my TV has all those HDMI connections, why not use them?

lovinthehd hit the most important one: the AVR's codecs and ability to decode and pass high quality signals surpasses the abilities of a TV. Hands down there's more advanced function and better quality to be found using your AVR rather than your TV.

For me however, I discovered the real benefit through the WAF factor (wife acceptance factor).
If I hook all the crap up to the TV, then my wife had to choose which input for which thing to watch and it was a never ending confabulated mess just for her to watch TV. Negative husband points.

If I hook all the inputs up to the AVR and run a single HDMI cable to a single input on the TV, voila, watching TV just became easy again. WAF factor up 100%. Positive husband points. Combine in a Harmony remote to keep everything graphic and icon based, and my wife can operate the whole shootin' match with the press of a button and it works nearly every time.

Sometimes its the little things;)[/QUOTE]

Thanks I appreciate it.
Probably a dumb question but if I am watching tv and I switch the input to the ps4 will the receiver automatically switch as well or will I have to switch it on the receiver's input? And vive versa?

TVs are generally pretty good at handling the video, but as posted, they don't pass much WRT encoded audio. Using the TV to switch between inputs is great if the number of sources is limited and they're all from the same manufacturer, so one remote controls everything but there are obviously ways around that. However, if someone wants more sources, better sound and the area below the TV needs to be free from ANY kind of clutter, longer cables are needed and long HDMI cables are expensive. They also take up space and hiding 5 cables is more difficult than hiding one.

If you route everything thru the receiver then all you need do is change input on the receiver. If you're routing things thru the tv and you're routing audio thru a particular input on the receiver (tv for example) then you wouldn't need to change the setting on the receiver. Somewhat depends if you use the tv's speakers and how you set it up....I've got a few avrs and each of their remotes may work with a tv for macros (in theory, as long as the codes work well enough...personally I use a Harmony remote).

A Harmony remote solves a plethora of issues. I haven't been without one in so long I can't remember life without one. Its the only way my wife can turn the stuff on and off without hollerin' at me:p

LMFAO* Its the total opposite in my house. Where are the original remotes because this Harmony doesn't work right. They select an activity and then wave the harmonyaround like its a magic wand despite my insistance on keeping it still and pointed at the equipment until its done its thing. I'm truly baffled.

As I was writing that post I was thinking to myself, you know, my wife still fouls it up a l lot by waving it around like a lightsaber instead of pointing it like a pistol. Your post made me laugh. Same in my house.
I have her fairly well trained, but, not really

Yeah, the older IR harmony remotes were ok. I've got one of the companion remotes that has the hub that can use IR blasters. No issues at all. It's one of the best remotes I've ever used. Amazon had them on sale for $70 so I got another one for the theater. I can't imagine using anything else now.
