I'm curious as to why nobody ever mentions harman/kardon. I've been on a couple forums and I can't say I've seen one person say that he owns one.

Are they considered bad?

I'm particularily interested in the AVR-325 since my yammy seems to have "issues".

I would consider the Integra DTR-6.4 or the new Yamah RX-V2400 before I'd even consider the Harman/Kardon. the 325 only has a 24bit DSP the Integra has two 32bit Cirrus and the Yamaha has a new 32bit YSS-930 LSI.

:)~

those amps you mentioned aren't even in the same price range. The integra in particular is a THX amp :p

Yeah, I've never seen a good review for HK. I would love to hear a full review for an HK receiver, 325/525..
To me, the HK receiver set up is very flexible and easy, has more coax inputs than many other receivers, and they sound really good.
But I don't understand why HK can't get people attention on its products. My best guess is its conservative power ratting and fairly more expensive than the similar competitors. People don't really like to see 65w-75w/ch from an $700-$900 receiver. Before I bought my Sony 5ES. I was thinking about the AVR-520 but I don't know if I got enough power. I did alot of research and I know the AVR520 has the capable of driving most speaker for a medium room.

They do have a fairly high current rating of +/-35amps. I went to a local audiophile shop and one of the salesmen told me H/K's tend to sound kinda harsh, I'm not sure if he was being honest or just trying to get me into something of theirs...

He could honestly think that, or it could be code for "We don't make as much money on those!"

That is most likely the case, have seen and heard it many a times.

Funnies I heard was when someone told me that M&K tech had advised him not to sell Yamaha as they are prone to go bad and are poorly constructed.

Hi all,

I am new to the HT field and all so I could be totally off. I currently have a low end system upgrading soon though. From what I have read some receivers who say they offer 90w a channel do offer 90w to 1 speaker but not when more than one are going off at same time. the more speakers working at once the lower the watts go. I have read that high end and some lower end models play the watts they say they play. Like H/K if it says 70 watts "avr-525" it plays 70 w on all channels all the time. But I could be wrong and if I am could someone let me know I am ready to learn more. Also what is wrong with H/K. you say you would prefer the other models but why?

I have no beef with H/K.

If the amp states x watts/channel with all channels driven then you know where it stands. Most are not rated this way, however.

I am the very proud owner of a Harman/Kardon receiver. A European/Australian model AVR-4500.

I do not associate the H/K with sounding "harsh", but to me, the sound is "precise".

They are rated at 5 X 55W, and into the my B&W DM602S3 (@ 89dB/m), your ears will be bleeding before the H/K shows any sign of distress.

It also is a competent music receiver.

Dis, if you like the features of the H/K, give it a listen. If you like the sound, then consider buying it.

I returned my yammy and am now using my old AVR-5.

Funny thing is I find this old 35wattx5 amp drives my speakers harder than the yammy did. I mean you can really feel the pressure difference.

My only problem with this amp is that it doesn't drive the powered sub as well as the yammy did. I had to crank up the volume on the sub and on the amp as well to get the same performance I had with the yammy.

I'm just gonna save up and go with seperates...
