Just saw the new Denon lineup and I am confused by why AVR's continue to come out with Ethernet connections rather than wi-fi. This certainly isn't unique to Denon but surely most people are running wifi networks at home much more often than cat-5 nowadays and for things like network updates, Pandora, etc., wifi works just fine. It seems that many of the TV and Blu-Ray networks are already wifi compatible, so I don't understand why the AVRs refuse to get with the 21st century.

Any ideas?

Noise.

Wi-Fi radios generate noise.

It's as simple as that.

Denon had Wi-Fi on several models and since removed it to preserve noise floor.

Don't agree..
To date, AVRs have been largely price driven and wi-fi capability is expensive, especially in consideration of the rapid downward erosion of leading market price points.. It is difficult to add features and performance while decreasing its price..

When the AVR evolves to a network central component such as a media center which includes a powerful processor... Then yes, wi-fi will be standard equipment...
To date many AVRs have added USB, so the next step could be a USB wireless adapter..

Just my $0.02... ;)

The USB adapter Wi-Fi actually solves both issues here.

On one hand the manufacturer has an easier time hitting competitive price points by eliminating the cost of the radio.

On the other hand placing the radio outside of the shielding greatly reduces the impact the radio would have on the noise floor of the receiver.

Because it works better than WiFi.

I have a dual band wireless N network with 50mbps connection approx 20 ft away from my equipment. I have several devices in my HT that are wireless. While a wifi connection would have been easier, I have a wired connection to all of them. I understand the idea of using wifi, however nothing in my opinion beats a wired connection.

I will say that this is a price issue.

Wi-fi, on most products, adds $30 or more to the cost.

A wi-fi bridge can be had for $50-$100.

For those who must have their A/V receiver networked (many do not) and do not have ethernet at their equipment rack, then anyone can pick up a wi-fi bridge.

A quick look shows one for $37 delivered to your home...

I get that wireless should be available, but really, it is. And, Denon (and others) are already pretty lousy at their Internet features.

It doesn't support PoE but except Security cameras and phones, what in Hi Fi world would ever need this feat. ??

Properly designed and installed WiFi (N 5Ghz Mimo) would be enough to stream hd content..

(The catch is the proper way sometime gets expensive quickly )

I also run a wireless bridge. Never had any issues with it. We Stream media and game online with it.
