I noticed that since I went to 7.1 even though a blu-ray will be in 7.1 it only plays in 5.1  Some will and some wont like my Hellboys II is in 7.1 but it only plays in 5.1 . I have a sony 550 bp with the latest firmware updates and a Pioneer Elite 94 AVR . I've probably spent a few hours reading both owners manuals from front to back and cant figure out why I only get 7.1 on some and not others , Its got me slightly frustrated  Thanks in advance!!!

Ed, are you positive that the discs in question have a 7.1 soundtrack - and that you've selected that soundtrack from the audio options? It's entirely possible that the default track would be 5.1.

Also, you do have your surround back channels enabled in your receiver, right?

Hey Adam :) yes I always click on the 7.1 option and sometimes its the only option in english lol also have my srb on auto if I put it on the SRB "ON" option it just splits the SRB channels between the SB . I just bought Ice Age Dawn of the Dinosaurs in 7.1 and all 7 channels light up on my avr and I get true 7.1 sound threw my SRB channels but it wont do it with my Hell Boy II BR and some others . At first I thought it was the blu-ray and took it back but the new one did the same thing and then I realised that some of my 7.1 BR will play 7.1 and some wont . Its no real big deal becuase I can mimic 7.1 By running srb "ON"but its bugging me lol . The SRB auto option just gives you 7.1 when thats the signal it detects and works correctly with only some 7.1 Blu-rays .

I just did a very quick search for this issue, and came across this page.

So, you are not the only one. Plus, that page has some info that you might find helpful/interesting.

How do you have the audio from the Bluray player. Do you have it as PCM or Bitstream. Just a shot in the dark, but I think PCM defaults to 5.1 lossless while bitstream stays 7.1.

Now I'm positive I am talking out my arse on this, it's the end of a long day and my mind is tired (and a few cold ones) but this could be a reason (but i am doubting myself, just tossing out ideas)

I do find it odd that some movies would be in 7.1 while others are at 5.1 when saying it is 5.1 for some reason I think your reciever is just outputting the core signal at 1.5 Mbps and not the lossless

But thinking about it, PCM should also be output at 7.1

Think I need another beer. :p
