Why don't display manufacturers send out properly calibrated sets? It burns my bacon do think I would have to spend another $300 or so to have a service technician come in and calibrate it. Its analogous to buying a receiver that has the capbility of the latest audio codecs provided you pay the extra money to buy that chaip and place it in the empty socket on the board o fthe receiver. Its crazy..

This gets asked every so often. I think that I even asked it a while ago. :)

The experts will have the better answers, but my recollection is that proper TV calibration depends on the environment of the TV. You mentioned receivers, but one of the best new features of receivers (IMO) is the auto set-up that is meant to calibrate your audio system in your listening environment for your listening positions. Perhaps someday TVs will come with auto calibration systems. You can buy them (like the Spyder systems), but they aren't really inexpensive.

Including what Adam said above the main reason why they don't do it is because they are often optimized for the "showroom" to create the highest appeal to shoppers. What I would like is if some high end shops would have appropriately lit rooms and have a professional calibrator on staff.

The main reason is because of set to set variance off the line. Only 1 manufacturer has been able produce displays with less than 1% variance and they are out of the game.
