Why do women wear skirts?

Women have been wearing skirts for as long as recorded human history. There must be a reason for this age old style of clothing.

In the old days, women wore long skirts, practically covered their feet. Did that also drive men crazy?

Use to be everyone wore skirts (or togas or whatever you want to call em). Now, only scottish men and women wear skirts. As to why most men (Scots not included here) went to wearing pants is due to warfare and fighting on horseback (blame the Romans here). After these fighting men returned home to their crops, they found that pants provided more comfort and protection from the little chiggers that infested their crops. So they keep on wearing pants.

Never thought about it this way before. Very valid points. Horseback riding is definitely easier with pants than skirts.

But women also used to work on the farms. Why didn't they change to wearing pants?

Horse back riding is easier when you have not Pen15 and nuts.

Women ware skirts because it drives men crazy. These crazy men give money way to the women in skirts.

It's a lot easier to make yourself a skirt than a pair of pants, don't you think?
Pants take more precision to make. You have to get the length right and the inseam and the waste. A skirt is more of a no brainer. I think it was just the simplicity factor.

Yes, especially if they showed a bit of ankle or calf!!!

I'll have to do some research in to why though, if you're going back in history... I think women wore skirts/dresses long before plants/slacks. And in the same idea, those women that wore pants were frowned upon for quite some time.

Now a days.. I think women wear them because they want to look sexy, or simply have a different look.

Women wore dresses/skirts because:
1. they were easy to make
2. easy to maintain
3. easy to clean.
4. dried out quickly
5. take less material to make than pants (by less, i mean several small flat pieces could be stitched together and achieve something that actually looked ok, compared to trying to piece together pants.
6. they were useful for carrying things, like fruit and such.

As for the women and horses thing, up until the mid 1900's women were almost required to ride side-saddle.

As for why they wear them is for the purposes listed above (work, easy to make, ect.) You have to figure, up until the 60's it was uncommon for a woman to show their legs in public, so that means before then all skirts were ankle length. Now, skirts are shorter, and they're worn for: comfort, style, drive men crazy, easy entry, ect.

But still, even with ankle length skirts, you can't help but still fancy that is still more convenient for "entry" than wearing pants.

Don't forget Japan which didn't even have a "pants" concept till the mid-19th century. Of course they also didn't have 1500 years of Christian modesty and the underclass would go about their business naked as often as clothed, depending on the weather.
