Why do my 720p TVs allow me to change settings on the input device to 1080i?

HI there. I have multiple TVs whose specs are 720p but anything allows me to change to 1080i and the TV will actually show me that it's on 1080i. How is this possible? Is it really showing in 1080i? I"m not understanding this at all. Clarification appreciated. Thanks.

No, it's not actually showing in 1080i. Your TV can accept a 1080i input, but will scale it down to 720p.

That's a pretty old question. 720p is 1280 x 720 lines (and most 720 displays are actually 768p @ 1366x768 ). 1080i is 1920x1080. 1080i is interlaced and 720p is progressive though. So while 1080i has more lines of resolution, 720p refreshes twice as often so it is technically the better choice. That said, it will also depend on the deinterlacer IIRC, so one or the other may look slightly better on your display and to compound that, it can be difficult for most to even really notice a big difference between the two.

720p is not bad news. If you are sitting far enough and tv is on the smaller size, then you can't see 1080p anyway
