Technically, your house DOES have surge protection with a breaker box. That's the whole point ;-)
The main breaker is usually 100 or 200amps (depending on the year/area of your house), and each leg of the breaker is usually on a 15/20/30 amp breaker. That right there could stop a big power surge coming in from the power grid.

If I were you, I'd look to isolating your circuits more. An example would be a dedicated 15/20 amp circuit for your AV rack, not just using the same circuit that is already feeding every other outlet & lighting in the room.
