I want to install a whole house stereo system in a house that I purchased new 15 years ago. Currently, it has a mono M&S music/intercom system throughout.

I have a Pioneer Elite 7.1 surround system in my family room; a Harmon Kardon 7.1 surround system in my basement TV room; a McIntosh MC2600 600wpc Power Amp, McIntosh CD player, McIntosh Tuner, and McIntosh Audio/Video Control Pre-Amp for music in my stereo listening room; a Pioneer SPEC-4 150wpc Power Amp, Soundcraftsman Pre-Amp, Teac X10 Reel-to-Reel, Techniques MK1200 turntable, and some other old school pieces in my basement card room. I want to hook all of this together and add to it some better ceiling mounted speakers. I plan to to install 3 pairs of stereo speakers (6 speakers) - one pair in my breakfast nook, a pair in the master bedroom, and a pair in the upstairs foyer hallway.

I considered purchasing a couple of stereo amplifiers to power the new ceiling speakers, but I was wondering what would happen if I connected the McIntosh MC2600 up to an impedance-matching speaker selector to drive the 6 new ceiling speakers? Other than being a waste of a wonderful amp, what are the down sides?

Understand. I could use the SPEC-4, but was thinking that I needed an amp with a lot more WPC. I really don't understand the whole impedence matching thing, nor the pro's and con's of simply purchasing three 'low end' power amps or one 'strong' enough to push the ceiling speakers. While price isn't that big of an issue, I don't want to waste money, but I do want good clean sound.

What type of control are you looking for, ie keypads, just vc, remotes?

I want to install some type of volume controls for the bedroom and breakfast. I'd like for the bedroom to control the volume for the hallway.

Look into the niles zr4630 used with keypads. Used around 400 and a variëty of keypads to choose from. Selectable sources and stable into 4ohms.
