"Montclair, NJ - He claimed to be from Philadelphia. She told of being a native New Yorker. Together they lived in New Jersey with two young daughters on a leafy street in Montclair, hoping to look like any other suburban couple living the American dream, authorities said.

But in truth, authorities say, Richard and Cynthia Murphy were highly trained spies from Russia. They encoded messages with invisible ink, brushed past co-conspirators in train stations to hand off computer memory sticks and may have even faked their marriage for the sake of gathering intelligence for Moscow, authorities said.

"You were sent to the USA for long-term service trip. Your education, bank account, car, house … all these serve one goal: fulfill your mission," the Murphys were told in a message from Russia by the contemporary equivalent of the K.G.B., according to a criminal complaint unsealed today in federal court in Manhattan."

Can you just see James Bond kicking some suburban NJ arse?

Of the 11 accused spies, 3 were posing as Canadians. What is it about Canada that agents use fake Canadian identities to pursue their aims? Israel has done the same thing too...

I don't remember hearing a lot about Canadian spies, other than the movie 'Spies, like us' and that being the case, they may think it decreases suspicion of them if they say "Canadian" instead of "American".

We don't have an agency like the CIA, MI6 or Mossad - so no overseas spying. However, we do have the Communications Security Establishment Canada (CSEC), which collects SIGINT - something like the NSA, if I understand correctly.

You may, but they could be so secretive that you have never heard of them. They're verrrry sneaky, you know.
