I saw a quick HD-DVD demo the other day. I'm not sure which player was being used. I got to see a couple trailers - Dukes of Hazzard and Serenity. They looked very clear and crisp. Since this was only demo material, it was hard to draw any real conclusions. Until a studio actually releases a movie in the HD-DVD format, you won't know what you are going to get as far as quality goes. I know that most people at Audioholics are waiting to see what Blu-ray can do, and I was told that the Blu-ray demo was a bit more impressive that the HD-DVD one (I didn't get to see the Blu-ray demo). That was one person's opinion.
Anyway, you may want to wait a while to see what happens (if your patience will hold out). First generation players are usually buggy, as us early adopters know all to well. If you really want one badly and are willing to take your chances, you can preorder them all over - Crutchfield, Best Buy, Amazon, etc. . . .
