Coming out of the Best Buy on Snowden River in Columbia, Md. when two shady looking guys in a semi-beatup old white Chevy AstroVan approached me in the parking lot and asked if I wanted to buy a home theatre setup. Their routine was straight off the websites:

"I've got an extra set of these because (blah, blah, blah) and they told me to get what I could...yada yada yaddita. I immediately threw both my hands up in the air and yelled: "Yes!" like I just hit the lottery. It was like I earned some kind of Jedi notch on my belt I was so excited. Of course the scammers took my reaction the wrong way and assumed they had an easy sale.

I explained that I was just excited that it was like a dream for me to finally meet the world famous White Van Speaker Scam artists and I even asked if they would pose for a picture with me. Unfortunetely they declined and drove off.

Oh well...

It would have been hilarious if you could have gotten pics for sure! Too bad you didn't have a cell phone with built-in camera to take a quick snap!

I was approached by them once at college, they sure did try hard to make the sale, but of course I knew better and didn't give them my money.

Classic one dude!! I wish I would have thought of that one... I've been approached twice. The first time I was young and I didn't know much about audio, but I knew what crap was and their stuff looked like crap. The second time I knew fully well what they were and I laughed and walked away. I have also seen them approach people and I have a friend who was unfortunately not knowledgeable and actually bought some thinking he got a great deal...

So what did your friend think of the speakers after he listened to them?

I listened to them too. It was a little sub/sat setup. They made sound, but they sounded about like an HTiB: thin in the midrange and the sub wasn't very powerful; nothing to write home about. I didn't ask him how much he paid, because he didn't offer it up and I didn't want to tick him off after explaining to him what he had bought...

I had a friend that made a purchase from one of them in 1998...these were the large monitor-style (carpetted box) speakers. He bought one. And yes, I mean ONE speaker. After he drove off, he got buyer's remorse (specifically fear of his brother beating him up for wasting his rent money) and tried to cancel his check. Not realizing that they'd sold it to him in the parking lot of his own bank. So they sold it to him, walked in and cashed the check, and drove off...so he was outta luck.

Anyway, he was scared to take it home so he gave it to me. (free) ... and I gotta say, it improved my home theater setup dramatically! (by which I mean it gave me something to put my receiver on so that it wasn't sitting on the floor out of sight of the remote)

I'm the kind of guy that would stand there and waste an hour of their time.. keep looking more and more interested, and then when I can stall them no more, tell them where they can stick those speakers.

Good story, though. :)

I wish I had one. :( The speaker went to a neighbor of ours who helped us move. (She took the speaker, couch, and coffee table made out of a papaison chair base so we didn't have to move them to Houston)
