Which would you chose, yamaha s2500 or Denon 2910?

I am looking a getting a new dvd player soon and was looking at getting the Denon 2910 or the Yamaha S2500. I've heard there were some issues with the Yamaha but not for sure on that. If you were to buy either one which would you chose and why? I am falling more towards the Denon due to it has a dvi input and the reviews are outstanding. I own a Yamaha 2500 receiver and it just awesome, I love it. Tell me which you all like?

Come on guys, I know somebody has one of these players. Also, I have a tv with dvi input only. Also what is the big thing with i.link? Is this what is used for SACD's for audio? If so, my reciever I have (yamaha rxv2500) doesn't have it. But anyways back to the dvd players. I have been reviewing both dvd players for the last 2 weeks and both seem to be very good players by some owners. Some others state they are both slow at response and so on. I am more into the movies than music. If there are some better dvd players out there that ate better for my needs please tell me as I am up for ideas.

I believe it's just us AZZ123. Yeah I have been trying to figure out which would be the best to go with for a little while now. I can't seem to make my mind up on either one and would have liked to have known if somebody else has had this thought also. Also that pioneer seems to be a nice unit.

Go for the denon!

They make an excellent DVD player. If you are still unsure of the two take them both home and audition them.

They are both good players.

here are the faults I know of:

Denon
1. cannot output component and HDMI similtanously.
2. Mild macroblocking issue(I believe was resolved through firmware), and only an issue with projectors mainly.


Yamaha
1. remote lacks backlight
2. advance search button scrolls to fast
3. does not recognize scratched media very well
4. no DVI output
5. audio inferior to denon


I myself own a denon 3910 and a Yamaha RXZ9. I hope to get the next generation DVD from Yamaha(if they improve the quality), and their new flagship when it arrives. Until then I will swear by the denon universal players and continue to buy them.

Thanks for the input. I have been wanting a new dvd player for awhile now but after reading many reviews on both of them I may decide to wait a little while more until they get most of the bugs worked out of them. Also I have tried to go demo them at my local tweeter store and they don't have either one in stock, they have to get it from their wharehouse.

I have a 2910 and have liked it. It's currently for same in classifieds section, as I'm upgrading all my components. The 2910 is a very nice unit at it's price point. I currently have a demo rotel 1072 CD player, and have not noticed any difference between the redbook cd sound quality between the 2. The rotel is 700 and is only a cd player, and I was pleasantly surprised to hear no differences in sound quality. DVD video playback is exceptional, and was good enough to remove a new TV from my wish list (I have a 13 year old Sony). Redbook CD playback is very good, SACD is fantastic, and DVDA so far is good, but I have very little of a DVDA library so it may be the source material. You will need 5 cables to run DVDA/SACD, so keep this in mind budget wise, as the 2910 will not send DVDA/SACD via a digital connection. Overall, it's a very solid player at it's price point. I have no experience with the yamaha.

Here is a shootout of almost all dvd players.
BEWARE. This will take a long time to load, even on a cable modem.

The funny thing is, the top player is the Denon 5910 @ over 3,000.00
#2 is the Oppo @ 200.00

There are quite a few that are not on this list the 2 that come to mind are the NeuNeo HVD-2081 and the new one 2085.

Sorry, but my point really was to say that the 2910 is on that list, and it can be used to see what features passed and what failed.

I just received my new 59avi and I have to say IMHO that it has PQ in line with Denon 3910. DVD-Audio/SACD discs are amazing and I am also hearing additional effects during movies (mainly from the rears that I have not heard before).

Cons - Setup took awhile as the menu can be confusing and the remote is just plain bad.

FYI 59avi is headed back to store. Great PQ. Great sound. Not so great playback of DVD-R.

Through researching problem it seems that high end players are very picky about dvd-r (type of media,how it was burned,type of label etc)\

Just can't justify a player that $$$ that can't play my home movies.

Aliixer, how have you determined that the S2500's audio is inferior to that of the Denon? Is it simply your opinion?

Firefighterchi, I own the S2500 and, like Aliixer, the Z9. In principle, I cannot really comment on the sound quality since I use the Z9 to do all the D/A conversion. I certainly noticed an improvement in the picture from my previous DVD player, but considering that that was a budget player, it is perhaps unsurprising.

There are some issues that slightly irritate me with the S2500; the player takes some time to read CD's, although given the number of different types of disc it can read, this is perhaps understandable. I personally would like to have had an eject button on the remote so that I could program it into my Z9's remote. At the price of the S2500, I would have liked to have seen machined metal buttons on the fascia in a similar manner to the Z9. I would also have liked to have been able to completely turn off the front display instead of simply being able to dim it.

These are, at the end of the day, fairly trivial issues, and for this reason I am happy to live with the player, and of course aesthetically, it is a perfect partner to the Z9 which is one significant reason for me purchasing it in the first place.

Brian...you keep swearing by these Oppo and NeuNeu models but you forget to mention everytime that they are not universal players. People looking to upgrade want to play SACD and DVD Audio. While these players look excellent for what they are, they are not in the same category as the Denon and Yamaha models.

I recently picked up a Yamaha DVD S657 for the same price you paid for the Oppo ($229). And it plays SACD and DVD Audio and has Yamaha quality. 24 bit D/A converter, upsampling...excellent build quality.
