So I am thinking about getting into the Blue RAy Upgrade.
My receiver is not HDMI.
What should I get first, the Blue ray dvd player or the receiver first?
I was thinking i could get a blue ray dvd player first and hook that up via hdmi right to my TV since that takes HDMI until i upgrade the reciever but i would not get the Dolby TRue HD or DTS master audio until the receiver is upgraded.
Thoughts?

I would get the player first. Then at least you will have an upgrade you can see. Then work on the upgrade you can hear.

Does your current receiver have digital coaxial input for audio? I would use that for the audio input instead of optical (or even HDMI when you do get an HDMI capable receiver.) HDMI audio, at least for my Receiver (NAD T747) and BluRay player (Sony BDP-S360) with SONY HDMI cable, very noticeably lacks volume, clarity, and power in the low end compared to using digital coaxial audio [forgot to get an extra Digital Coaxial cable when picking up the BluRay player]. I've always used a Digital Coaxial cable for the reciever audio input.

Prices are pretty reasonable now for BluRay players... would be a good time to get one :)

If your receiver has 5.1 or 7.1 analog inputs you could get a player which decodes internally and outputs via analog, like a Panasonic BD55 or BD80.

The 5960 does have the inputs, so this would be my reco' as well. Especially, since it looks like you're running a 5.1 setup.

I just upgraded my bedroom system with BluRay and bought a used player for US$68.

You can find some deals out there on some really good players if you know what to look for.

I am really happy with my two Samsung BD-P1200's. Best upscaling DVD player for the money.

If I were to buy a new one, the Oppo BDP83 is now available. Should be a great DVD upconverting model too.

LOL you don't need a DVD player if you have a Blu-ray it will do both.

I dont understand what you are trying to say. The Samsung is a BR player, it does do both, and standard DVD's better than just about anything else available.

I think this is a great recommendation.

That being said, and I'm in the same place as you are, what's HDMI 1.4 going to do to everything when it comes out?

I could've sworn that I saw an article here that even the connector will physically change. Ugghhhh.....

But I'm in the same place as you are, but probably am in even deeper as my display only hits 1080i, so, unless I update my player, my receiver, and my display, Blu-Ray isn't gonna make a huge difference.

I dunno about the rest of you guys, but in the interest of domestic tranquility, we're making do with what we have (and it ain't bad, either).

You must have something in the menus not set up correctly. No real reason why this would happen otherwise. Perhaps the LFE is on dynamic reduction mode, DR on?
