I am finally going to buy a subwoofer. My priority is music. if it is good with movies too it's a bonus. I am looking at 2 Martin Logans, the Dynamo and the Abyss. Also I looked at the Definitive technology 2 super cube. Has anyone heard these and what can you recommend. Space is about 3000 cubic feet. The room opens up to a kitchen. Thanks!!

My system:
Musical fidelity 3.2cr integrated amp
Onkyo TXSR700 receiver
Monitor Audio S6 front, S2 center, SFX rears
(S2 are run through an Ashly FTX1501 amplifier)
Monster Power line conditioner
Audioquest speaker cables and interconnect
Adcom GCD750 cd player

The Maritn Logan over the Def Tech, no question. Thats a lot of space for those subs to fill up with bass. how did you come to these final choices?

Well, they're not final. I have just heard good things about the Martin Logans. I don't want something boomy. I want something that will compliment my Monitor Audio S6 speakers. It will also be used in home theater but I am more interested in 2 channel stereo with my Musical Fidelity 3.2cr integrated amp. Do you think the Martin Logans will fill this room. Do you have any other suggestions? Would appreciate any help. Thanks!!

If you want a musical sub, stick with the sealed subs. I have the Dynamo, but I would have gotten the Abyss if the price was reasonable. The Abyss is the bigger version of the Dynamo. It will play louder and deeper while giving you the placement flexibility, striking look and immaculate build quality of the Dynamo. Of course, if you are willing to spend a little more, there is the Grotto, which has a servo-control circuitry and a high-pass filter which allow it to sound even better than the Dynamo and the Abyss.

I would go for two of the new VTF-2 MK3 at $499 each. Keep in mind that both the SVS and HSU subs are substantially bigger than the Martin Logans.
Abyss-
Weight: 40 lbs. (18.1 kg)

Dimensions (HxWxD): 15.8" × 13.5" × 15.2"

VTF-2 MK3-

22"(h) X 15" (w) X 23" (d)
Shipping Weight 80 Lbs

I think the 2x VTF-2 will give you a lot more for your money than one Logan.

I went to the local Best Buy / magnolia Hifi to listen to the Martin Logan subs. I wasn't really impressed with either of them. i don't know if it was the setup or what. I also heard the Vienna Acoustic speakers. Didn't impress me one bit. I was also less impressed with the knowledge of their sales people. Didn't know how to even use the receiver.

Do any of these companies like HSU or SVS have a trial period in which you can return it if you don't like it without charging a restocking fee? Appreciate any help. Thanks.

HSU VTF-3 MkIII with turbo charger = $799.

If really small is what you're after, maybe the SVS SB-12 Plus?

BOTH have a trial period, AFAIK.

The best sub on the market for less than $1000 is the HSU VTF-3 HO, bar none. Later on (if you need it) you can always ad the turbo and get even more performance.

I have a room that sounds just like yours - 3000 cu. ft. that opens to a kitchen. My Velodyne SPL1000 is very tight, detailed, and will blow you out of the room if you let it. It may cost a little more than the others mentioned here, but, IMHO, it is pure class. Plus, it's small and easy to integrate into a room. I've seen & heard some SVS models, and they were very impressive, but HUGE! If SWMBO will acquiesce to the presence of one of those monsters, go for it. I've got to live with unobtrusive.

I will go hear the Velodyne out. If it blows me away I will buy it as soon as I can talk the wife into spending yet another grand in music!!! Thanks.

I rock a Velodyne DSP 10 .... it's plenty! That's my two cents, ordered it through ebay dirt cheap! Way less than CC.
