what do you have now? How much are you willing to make on your initial investment? Are you going to purchase a tv or projector? What size is the room it is going in?

Knowing the answers to these questions will help people give advice wisely.

if you really want to be able to crawl into it with piecemeal upgrades, start with a decent reciever and some decent stero speakers. Then as you have more money you can add a center channel, surrounds, a sub, a TV, a DVD player, a universal player, etc.

some people will say look for a good financing deal out there ( this time of year they are easy to find) and just get something good to start with a make it last. Thats the camp I'm in really.

I had a TV and cheap DVD player to start with, from there I slowly built up our HT setup. These were the steps I took

1) Receiver (Denon 1603) and hooked up some old speakers I had lying around until I could afford better ones - cheap 5.0

2) Upgrade speakers (Wharfedale Modus 1.6 LR, Modus Ctr, Modus 2 surrounds) - 5.0

3) Subwoofer (Velodyne CT100e) - 5.1

4) Upgrade DVD player (Denon 2200)

5) Projector & screen (Infocus X1)

6) Upgrade Center & surround speakers (Wharfedale Modus 1.6 Ctr, Wharfedale DFS surrounds)

7) Upgrade Receiver (Denon 3805) and purchase 2 more DFS surround speakers - 7.1

8) Upgrade Subwoofer (Velodyne DD15)

And that took about 2 years, but we now have a respectable setup that we are happy with and enjoy immensely.

Hope this was what you were after
Cheers:)

Don't upgrade the DVD player until you upgrade the display. A decent display will take 480i from your old DVD player and make the image look decent, while a great DVD player will still look bad on your old TV.

I'd break down the loudspeaker purchase by suggesting you buy three smaller main speakers first (left/right/center). Choose main speakers that have a "big brother" perhaps, in which case you can later purchase "big brother" and use the old mains as surrounds and then surround back speakers (when you eventually purchase dipoles for the surrounds). I'm a big fan of dipole or dipole-ish speakers so perhaps this is one purchase you can save for and do all at once.

I woudl try to incrementally purchase so you don't actually replace what you are buying from here on out, but simply move it.

If you are looking at an entry level receiver (below $400) it doesn't really matter which brand you go with of the ones you mentioned - shop via features.

Hi Clint,

my speakers.U r really saving some serious bucks for me.With all the reviews i read i tend to lean towards the yummies. But some guys say yummies sound a little bright and lack warmth.I wont be listening music but only dvd movies if and when i complete my HT setup.
