Which sub is the best?

I have B&W 600 series bookshelf and center and a pair of JBL bookshelf speakers for the rear/surround. I run them thru a Sherwood Newcastle R-965. After piecing this together I am now ready for a Sub. My room size is 25X15X8.

I have been looking at the following subs;

Cadence CXS-12 for $280
Polk PSW1000 for $399
BIC Acoustech H-100 for $279

or should I match the speakers with a B&W sub in the same price range?

Suggestions welcome but I would like to stay under $400.

no you don't need to match the speaker and subwoofer brands.

i dont think you'll get your 400's worth with a B&W sub

For a room that big you need to increase your sub budget a bit...Or you won't hear or feel anything a sub is meant to do. Your right at 3000 cu. ft. so the cheapest I would go would be the Hsu Research VTF-1 AT $404.00 in satin black. It's a 10" sub just rated for 3000 cu. ft. rooms.

Competing with that is the SVS PB10-NSD for $429.00. I would give the heads up to this one for HT use.

If you've got a few pennies more, the best deal right now is the Hsu Research VTF-3 MK3 Satin Black 15% off for $549.00. That sub is usually $749.00 and is very musical, and would fill your room with plenty of bass.

B-stock Model PB12- NSD Black vinyl 12" SVS for $519.00 on the SVS B-Stock page. That would work.

Stretch for an HSU STF-2 or try and find a b-stock or used one.

I would also suggest you look at at the SVS PB12-NSD on their b-stock page. Your room is fairly large and that unit would work well especially for home theater applications. I know it is over your listed budget but you are going to be hard pressed to find a sub that can provide proper performance in a room that size for $400...

What is the difference between the HSU STF-2 and VTF-1? I printed the specs and do not see anything...what am I missing?

the VTF1 has variable tuning - and i believe a slightly better driver ("better magnet")
better enclosure
flatter FR

Great advice and thank you to everyone.

Here is another question...If a sub is all about moving air then which is better a 12 or 15" woofer at say 200 watts or a 10" woofer at 300-350 watts?

I assume it would be the larger woofer when in a large room.

My room is 16x28x7 so we are close in size, I bought a Epik Knight 15" woofer and it seems to be the perfect amount of bass. (by perfect i mean alot)
I just got a av123 MFW-15 that i am trying right now they are both great, I dont run them at the same time though, if i did that i would not sell one.

It's not just moving air- look into "transfer function". It's basically how the speaker fits the room and makes all the difference in whether it's right or not. The speaker's Q factor and that of the room need to work together.
