Personally, I wouldn't correlate "bang for the buck" and $2000+ together. Now if you're asking what's the best system to be had for $2000+, then that question would make more sense.

Aperion Audio's Intimus 5T-DB Hybrid HD system for $2,829.00 comes to mind as I've read nothing but rave reviews about them.

For myself, I'm a big fan of Paradigm speakers and I'm sure you could get a full package of Paradigms at the $2000 price range that sounds damn good.

What I would recommend as "best bang for the buck" would be a system from TSC (The Speaker Company). Their TST2-HT package for $933 shipped is probably arguably the best bang for the buck 5.1 package you can get right now. Audioholics has a rave review of their TST2 Towers here.

My personal preference would be four Era D4 and an Era D4 LCR combined with a Hsu VTF-2 MK3. It will come within a tick of $2K and with a little negotiating at the Era dealer could probably come in very close to that mark. If there were room in the budget, I would say two Era D5 for the front mains and an Era D4 LCR with two Era D4 surrounds plus the Hsu sub. The Hsu sub could also be swapped for an SVS SB12-Plus.

This is pretty much the basis of my existing system although I currently have Dynaudios in place of my D5 mains. But still, in the price range under consideration, I have not personally heard any speakers in this price range to make me reconsider or regret my decision to purchase the Era speakers.

Note: My Dynaudio mains currently in place would eat up virtually your entire $2K budget so it's not a slight against the Era that they are not currently in the system.

+1 :) I second that. These three brands are of excellent value and great performers.

Hey Dave, you have any links, pictures, reviews of these Era and Dynaudio speaker models?

I guess what you are asking is if I was on the market right now with a budget of $2000, what would I get that would be the best value. For me, there are a few speaker systems to consider. Bass is very important for me in a home theater or music system, so I would budget half to the subs. I'll tell you what I would do for speakers first.

For the speaker half, one thing I would definitely take seriously is the moving sale Ascend is having, the five speakers for $1000. Those are supposed to be phenomenal speakers at their regular price, so that sale price (with free shipping) make that really hard to resist.

Another speaker package that would be enticing is SVS new STS speaker system, the 5.0 Affordable Audiophile Package. If they are still on sale for $1099, it looks like that would be a good deal. I wouldn't spend anymore than the sale price with that $2000 budget as that is already eating into the sub's share.

Elemental Designs have some very nice looking packages for excellent prices. What I would get with their Home Theater Package Builder is a A6 6T6 tower front, A6 6t6 Center, A3 5TC bookshelf rears. That comes out to $718.25, a great price and leaves plenty left over for subs! And if you buy one or two of their fine subs with that, you get a further discount.

Also, as the above poster suggested, I would look at packages from The Speaker Company. You could get a great five speaker deal for around $800 to $900 using their TST2 or TST3 towers as fronts. I wouldn't go less than towers for fronts from TSC, and I wouldn't get any of their subs (not that they are bad subs, but with your budget you can do so so much better).

HSU has excellent speakers along with their great subs. One thing I would take really seriously is getting their enthusiast 2 package, but replace the VTF2.3 with TWO VTF3.3s. Since that isn't an official offering, you would have to discuss it with them, but that is a deal I believe they would be willing to cut for 2K. That would be an absolute beast of a system for 2K, I know because I already have one VTF3.3, and it is a monster, two of them would reduce me to tears and have me begging for my life. This is a serious contender for 2k.

Something else worth mentioning, AV123 has a great sale on a ELT525 five speaker setup, for only $600. They are supposed to be very good speakers and that is a incredible markdown from their regular price. They have a package that comes with the MFW sub, but I would steer clear of their subs. Really.

Those are a few speaker packages I would consider. There are plenty more I would look at too, but I don't have time here to go over all of them. Stuff from Axiom, Paradigm, Polk, Klipsch, Infinity, Yamaha, etc. The point is I would reserve roughly half for the subwoofers.

For $1000, here are the subs I would consider:
Epik Dragon $1000
Epik Pheonix $1100
ED A7S-450 $850
ED A5 350 $800
SVS PC12 plus $950
Rythmik D15SE $1000
Rythmik F15 $900
HSU VTF3 mk3 $700

or I might get two of the following:

Outlaw Audio LFM-1 Plus Subwoofer
$550
Outlaw Audio LFM-1 Compact $400
HSU VTF2 mk3 $550
HSU VTF1 $450
SVS PC12-NSD $570
SVS PB12-NSD $570
SVS PB10-NSD $450
Elemental Designs A3-300 $550

Of course, including shipping, none of the speakers are really $1000 exactly, and none of the subs are $1000 either so you have a lot of different options to mix and match. And, of course if you stick with one company for both speakers and subs, you save even more. That ED package with two A3-300s would be a amazing setup and be well south of 2K. Or, if you can go a little bit north of 2k, get the ed speaker package I recommended with the A7-450 (not to be mistaken for the A7S-450), that sub would utterly level you. The HSU deal I mentioned earlier with two VTF3s would cause the earth to quake. Or get the AV123 speaker package and get two SVS PB12s, that would beat you senseless, and you would love it. Or pair the Ascend speakers with the Epik Dragon, your neighbors will all come to hate you out of envy. There are so many great choices for 2K...

Hey Thanks Dave for all these links, really appreciate that. :)

And also Thanks to Shady for the great recommendation on subwoofers.
I can recognise there the very best ones. Seems that you know your ABC about subs. :)

Best bang for the buck on speakers is again a very subjective point. What ever sounds best to you is the best bang for the buck be it internet brands or manufacturers selling through selected dealers. ;)

There's a lot of real estate above $2000. The B&W 802D comes to mind and they are definitely a bargain compared to some of the $100K rigs out there... ;)

I'm with 3db on this one, there is no way around doing some auditioning yourself.

My personal bias is Axiom. They give a nice clean neutral sound and offer good value. For a sub I would go DIY for the best value. I would love to hear the Salk Songtower with the upgraded ribbon tweeter. The PSB Imagine line gets good reviews as well. I also liked the Paradigm Studio line when I auditioned them, but they were out of my price range.

I tend to buck the system of popularity a little. For me Jamo is amazing for the price. Mine are about 5 years old and still blow me away every time I listen to them. Picked up the whole set plus a larger center for about $500 at that time. (local shop clearing them out....then went out of business)...but mine are still made in denmark...not sure about the new ones since big K bought them out.

AV123 used to be a great bang-for-the-buck site. Thats no longer true due to some shady dealings by the owner and some serious supply and delivery problems. Bummer, as I am a fan of their gear...just can't recommend them though.

Well they still are a bang for your buck company, however, you may just have to wait awhile to get your speakers.

RBH Sound CT Series, or MC series.

Most others pay companies like RBH to design and build their speakers. After building some of the world's best speaker for other famed brands, RBH started branding their own product over 30 years ago. As design duties are carried out in house, and they use their own proprietary cones/materials, they offer the best vaue for money to the end user.

Both the CT and MC have been revewed here with great scores, so much so that audioholics uses RBH as a reference model. They rank well for value, quality and performance being the big stand outs.

The best bang for buck speaker is the one that sounds the best to your ears. I know, you don't want to hear that, but it's completely true.

Take some familiar material with you and hit the road for some auditions. Listen to everything in your price range that peaks your interest and let your ears help you decide.

Some popular speaker brands are:

Paradigm
Monitor Audio
B&W
Klipsch
Kef
Revel
PSB
Salk Sound
The Audio Insider (Swan and Dana)
Vandersteen
JBL
Triad
Etc, etc, etc

Subwoofers:

SVSound
Epik
Elemental Designs
HSU

If you're interested in Internet Direct brands, make a post for an audition request in this forum or the brand's corresponding forum.

Best of luck to you in your search.

There is a new, inexpensive bang-for-the-buck contender called the WAF-1 from Tweak City Audio (tweakcityaudio.com). I ordered a pair last Thursday (the first day they were available) and the speakers were at my house by noon on Saturday. These are not in the league with what you are looking for ($2000.00 +), but for $229 shipped they are very good. Very balanced FR, excellent with TV/movie dialog.

For the $2000+ HT, you have to at least consider the Ascend Acoustics Sierra-1. This is a spectacular speaker for the money. Read up on these. You won't be disappointed.

Both of the above are ID speakers with the usual 30-day home trial. You have to pay return shipping, if you return them.
