So i have come to the conclusion that i need to replace my aging yamaha receiver and i am stuck between 2 options. Both i can get a close to the same price so my question is which is the better option.

1. yamaha rx v863
2. Onkyo TX-SR806

Both units have enough connectivity for my components and i can get both for under $900 Canadian. I am really indecisive right now but the money is burning a hole in my pocket.

Both Good Choices : What color display do you like ?

That's a tough call, both are fine receivers.
The TX-SR806 (green dispay)has more power 130 rms versus 105W, it support 4 ohm speakers if you need that and has Faroudja, and 5 HDMI inputs. It weighs 45.2 lbs.

The RX-V863 (amber display)had HD radio and is XM/Sirus ready if that is important to you form a tuner aspect, also has bluetooth (with optional YBA-10) and iPod(witjh optional YDS-10) It weighs 34 lbs.

Both have pretty good HDMI upconversion, zone 2 audio, audyssey set-up!

Do you have a coin to toss ? Heads or Tails

unfortunately no one in my city carries that older stock of denon recievers seems to be limited to the new stuff only.

ok so i called the audioplace and the only yammy they have is the display model yuck. but they have both the marantz and denon. both are exactly the same price any preference either way. i am leaning towards marantz as i always thought that was a slightly better brand but i could have been misinformed. i am picking it up tonight so a speedy answer would be best.

You can get the 2808ci from 6ave. Electronics or J&R for that price and that is with shipping...And this is a different level AVR than the ones you are looking at....you can't this come close to this for your price point any other way....it's the most you can get for your money right now....don't hesitate to buy from an online dealer....

i am sure thats the case but you see i am in canada and i don't want to get hit with suprise importation taxes and such which could end up negating the discount even if they would even ship to canada. Sometimes it really sucks living here.

Oh I see....well didn't know that part of the equation. In that case, I would agree with your leaning towards the Marantz, but the 2309ci is also a good unit. Personally I don't care for Yamaha, but many members are extremely happy with their units. It depends on your needs really....if you are a purist then you will probably appreciate the Marantz, but if you need more power and video options I would with the Denon...

I had a Marantz 30 years ago and it is still kicking and working in my Office Marantz 1060 with Fisher Tuner and Cambridge Audio S30 speakers. Then fo 30 years I screwed around with Yamaha. Pioneer, Sony, Panasonic, and Denon and finally went back to Marantz in February this year. I should have never changed! Marantz was quality then and is still quality now!

Having said all that Chopin's rec for the Denon 2808ci is also a sweet deal! if you can get it up north

Good Luck,

MidCow

P.S. - Yp might also ask Davemcc some good places to get audio equip in Canada.

Those are shipping weights. The 806 weighs a tad over 30 pounds and the Yamaha is just under. The 805 would be my choice (last year's model) as it was/is significantly better than the 806 (better dacs, and a vastly superior amp section, and it should be as it weighs almost 20 pounds more than the 806).

well i got my new reciever :):):):)

i went to audiotronic which in IMHO is really a great store. They had both the marantz and denon. I decided on the marantz since he gave me 70 bucks off the sticker price so i got it for 830 instead of 900. which means i got the extra warranty for like 5 bucks which includes remote replacement. I sepnt couple of hours setting it up and wow, just wow. Now the only dangerous part is that now i want more marantz stuff :).

Good for you Icd!!! As long as you are happy that is ultimately all that matters...but you certainly can't go wrong with the Marantz....Although it is too bad you couldn't take advantage of the deals on the 2808ci...Hope this AVR brings you lots of listening and movie pleasure for a while to come....Congrats!!
