Which receiver/amp for my situation...

I've just finished the building of my new theater room and need help with the equipment. The room is about 25 x 25 with a 10 x 10 bump-out (Really a bump-in) which gives me an area 15 x 25 for screen and seating. I have it wired for 7:2 (Don't know if I want the sub back or front so wired for both and may or may not use both.) and will put in a 120 inch wide screen.

I'm contemplating a Sony VPL-VW70 SXRD projector with an OPPO BDP-83 Blu-Ray/DVD player. The question is, what Receiver/amp to go for? I've researched here and elsewhere but find this a tough decision. Most receivers seem to be set up with all sorts of bells and whistles and multiple zones. I just need the one zone with inputs from the player, the web and cable TV and out puts to the projector and speakers. I don't want to spend a fortune but want something that's good and well worth the money as I believe the components I've mentioned above are.

Thanks for your help. G.

How many sources are you planning on using, and the speakers you will be using also determine whether or not you will need an external amp.

Seriously, I have no life.

The Denon receivers above the AVR-990/3310CI will take any input (composite, component, S-Video or HDMI) and output HDMI, so you would just need 0ne cable to the display. They also have Dolby Pro Logic IIz, which allows surround speakers to play side or height information and on the models that have more speaker outputs, both. Click on the receiver demos on the home page.

All the new denon receivers upconvert to HDMI and have PLIIz. My AVR-1910 does, and so does the entry level AVR-1610.

I'd keep an eye on the refurbs from ecost.com to find a good deal, but they are having a hard time keeping any refurbished denon receivers in stock. You can also get some denon refurbs from dakmart, but they will cost a bit more... however still much cheaper than a brand new unit.

Thanks for the replies and to answer some questions and add some more info… The ceiling is 9’ 3” and the walls have a deep red matte finish. The ceiling is a dark grey matte finish as is the wood trim on te windows and baseboard. The baseboard heating is the same dark grey. There are two windows each about 2 feet high and six feet wide situated about five feet from the floor. They will be well covered to block the little light they provide. The room is very dark.

Speakers? I haven’t decided yet but each corner, front and back, will likely be a tower about four feet high with cones in the range of 4 to 6 inches with a similar sized horizontal front center speaker. They will not be tiny cubes as, being a bass player, I’m a firm believer that you need surface area to move air. If I install side speakers they will be wall mounted and bookshelf sized. Recommendations are welcome.

Regarding the PJ and screen, AVRat brought up a good point about the brightness of the Sony which is the main reason I am still contemplating that as opposed to having made a decision. Recommendations for something of similar quality and price, that will handle a 120” screen, are welcome.

Thank you all. G.

I think you should finalize your selection of speakers, before receiver.
Different speakers have different needs, as with klipsch speakers, Efficiency of 93db and 8Ohm Impedance - you could get away with 50w/chan amp, but with 4Ohm and about 80db efficiency - you need some more serious to power it.
Plus your room aint exactly small so some careful plannin' is in order.

The JVC DLA-RS15 with a Carada BW 1.4 gain screen would provide an excellent image.

If you can wall mount the side-surrounds then I’m thinking that you’ll want to consider multi-poles and mono-poles for the rears since it’s only 15’ wide.

It’s difficult recommending speaker/sub/receiver options without some sort of budget in mind. Your area is good sized so a dual sub setup would be advisable. How do you feel about a speaker like this that has a matching stand available? http://www.ascendacoustics.com/pages/products/speakers/cmt340m/cmt340m.html

Are you incorpoating multi-tier seating? If so, what are the planned viewing distances?

I approve of this message.

Random thoughts:

I think the Oppo is totally unnecessary unless you do intend to listen to SACD and DVDA. You can take that $400 savings, and put that elsewhere.

Depending on the pricing you've found on that Sony, you can pony up a bit more for the CMS with the RS20/25/35. However, you'll need to buy a colorimeter, or hire a pro.

Something that I *might* mull over is spending a lot less on PJ (for Pana/Epson, or even less than that), with the anticipation of something like a LED 3D PJ a few years from now, or something, I dunno.

If blacks and contrast are key, but perfect colors are not worth the extra couple/few grand, AND you look to keep the PJ for several years or more, the RS15 is a great suggestion. You might save even more with the RS10 as used/demo/openbox.

Lastly, Carada is known as the bang for buck value in fixed screens, but if I built an HT all over again, I'd be thinking long and hard about a DIY AT screen, with Seymour material.

The Sony will give it up with blacks to the RS15 even RS10, but will have better OTB colors. The RS20/25/35 will win in just about every category, otherwise.
