I am looking to buy a new dvd (and have a 65" HD on the way) player for replacement of my 100$ panasonic deal. Is multi channel out more effective than optical out? What should I consider when upgrading? My budget is about 400$.

I am not sure what you are asking but I will take a shot at an answer.

If you are asking about multi-channel hookups (6 standard audio rca interconnects) they are used primarily for transmission of high resolution audio signals for music such as SACD and DVD-Audio. Your DVD player must be capable of processing these signals. Digital Optical and Coax are not used for this purpose.

For transmitting Dolby Digital or DTS audio for movie surround soundtracks you can use either digital coax or optical. Optical is not sensitive to interference from RF or EMI but digital coax may be effected by this interference. However the problem is usually associated with long cable runs so typically this is a non issue. From a sound performance stand point I personally cannot tell the difference. From a construction stand point I believe the digital coax to be a more robust cable. Remember that although a digital coax "looks" like a standard audio rca type interconnect they are not the same construction of cabling so make sure you buy an interconnect specifically marked for digital coax. Actually some brands use the exact same cable for digital and video connection (standard rca connection not S video). They are the same type of cable construction with 75 ohm loads.

As far as a player recommendation I would highly suggest looking at the Denon DVD 2200 (although there may be a more current model). This should fit your budget and needs.
