Receiver options

I would narrow your list to Yamaha, Denon, and Pioneer.
Make sure you understand the difference between video format conversion (input comosite or s-video, output component or HDMI) and video upscaling (input 480i/p, output 720p or 1080i). The Yamaha RX-V2700 includes a high end ABT video scaler, while the RX-V1700 only does the format conversion.

If you have a good upscaling DVD player and HD cable or satelite, then the receiver upscaling feature might not be worth too much.

Buy in this order

1. Yamaha
2. Pioneer Elite
3. Denon If you have a lot of $$$ buy separates. But it isn't nessesary unless you are LOADED and want the absolute BEST!

I have owned 5 top end Yamaha's and Just purchased my first Pioneer Elite 7.1 HDMI receiver. I like Denon, but get their higher end models. I choose these because of quality and clean power output. For the money, Yamaha is probably you best bet. I use my Pioneer Elite in my projector theater with 2 giant Cerwin Vega's with 2-15" woofers. I built a center speaker with 4-7" Definitive woofers and a 1" Moral dome tweeter. I use 4-6.5" Polk Audio 2-ways as my surrounds. I built 2 subs using Dayton 12" Titanic woofers, and a 15" sub in the back. I am running 300 watts rms to each. I have a Panasonic AE-900 projector and a Carada Criterion 118" screen in brilliant white. I also have a Monster Power HTS-5100 power conditioner. I have the XBOX 360 with HD DVD drive. I have video chairs with tables I built for steering wheels/ pedals. Also 2 Sennheiser wireless headphones. Its in a 15' x 21' basement theater. Pitch black/no light. I have a new system in my bedroom about $16,000 worth of equipement. Just bought a Sony 50" SXRD 1080p rear projection TV. I have a Yamaha 6.1 RX-V1 receiver and hugh older Polk Audio SDA speakers. I have 3 powered 12" subs in that room. 2 Cambridge in front and a Klipsch in the back. I put the TV stand, speakers into the wall trimmed off, looks fantastic! Anyway, I have the New Toshiba HD XA2 1080p HD DVD player comming tomorrow. I have been having partys every sunday watching OUR Chicago Bears kicking a$$. Hot wing's, pizza's, chip's, dip's, beer, etc.

Comparing thoughts

I've a similar dilemma:

I'm comparing the Yamaha RX-V2700 with the Denon AVR-3806 (listened to a friend's AVR-3803 and that sounded very good). It seems to me both are very competent and can do the job. Only, the Yamaha seems more user friendly when reading opinions, reviews and specs/manuals.
The Yamaha also has nice add-ons like USB and Ethernet connection which I would like to use and seems to have better HDMI upscaling (I've read the thread on that issue...).

Are my findings on track or am I comparing incorrect?

My 2 cents (and then some).... I just did an install for a customer 2 weeks ago who got a Yamaha RX-V1600 for Christmas. We hooked up a Canton - Movie CD 201 system I sold him along with a 42" Hitachi Plasma. The speakers sounded great (they always do :) ) but the receiver was brutal to work with. We did a zone 2 in another room and added some out door speakers.... terrible interface and set up for that. TERRIBLE! The worst issue we ran into was the HDMI interfacing with the TV. One quirk: If the Yamaha receiver is on and does not receive a return "handshake" from the video display it continuously flashes an "HDMI ERROR" message across its front display. According to Yamaha tech support this only happens with some brands and they don't know which, so don't ask them (however, I can tell you that Hitachi Director Series plasmas are one of the brands that has this problem). There is no way to turn it off. When would this be a problem? If you just wanted to listen to a CD or Radio station and not have the TV on this message pops up and you can't read the display. Everything works and sounds fine, but the receiver acts like it's really having a problem. Turn the TV on, the handshake is made, and it goes away until the TV is off again. Their zone 2 remote is garbage and is the only thing worse than the main system remote. I won't even begin to get into that or the other issues we had with the HDMI signals. In respect to the HDDVR cable box there was also no difference between component video or HDMI (I a/b’d for the customer and he couldn’t tell) when running through the receiver. For cabling we used all Impact Acoustic Sonic Wave & RapidRun.

Yamaha tech support was terrible and I felt like I was educating them on HDMI, HDCP, and cable box technologies. The only worse tech support I've ever had was from Jamo on one of their A-BUS systems. Oddly enough in the middle of all this my Elan rep mentioned to me that he also reps for Yamaha and wanted to gauge my interest in carrying the brand. Needless to say, he got an ear full about the problems I was having with the product….. but he didn’t dispute what I was saying nor did he have any solutions for fixing the problems about the video processing.

All of the receivers you mentioned have very similar offerings at that price point. Yamaha, Denon, Onkyo, take your pick and you'll be happy. As far as video processing goes the Onkyo stuff is easy to set up, but not great on the picture. Denon seems to be the best right now (my opinion) out of the brands you listed. As a company, they work hard to stay cutting edge with their video integration. And, no, I'm not a big Denon guy either. NAD is coming out very soon with HDMI on their new receivers. I would hold out for those models if you can wait because the NAD product does have a great sound to it and in my opinion the audio from NAD is superior to the brands you are considering. Need something right now and want an alternative to Denon? Look at the Harman Kardon models that do HDMI. Their video processing is very good as well.

For the Yamaha guys out there…. I am not downing the sound of the Yamaha product. It sounded very good and my customer was as pleased as he could be. When comparing it to like brands I don’t think it has any weakness when it comes to sound quality. I am only dogging the video processing capabilities, set up, and remote controls because it was a nightmare. There… I am finally done.

I to am frustrated with the Yamaha Multi-Zone features. Every time I turn the unit on Zone 2 and 3 are on, even if I turn them off the last time I had the unit on. That being said, note I don't have HDMI on my Yamaha, I have no other problems with Yamaha's upper end recievers.

Well, you should really compare Yamaha 2700 and Denon 4306, which have both HDMI switching, networking and USB connection (the features you've mentioned)
