I would like to purchase HDMI cables. Right now I need one for my HD Direct TV receiver and one also for my PS3. I was looking on Monoprice.com. Which HDMI cables would be good for me? Are there different types of HDNI cables? This is all new to me. Thanks for your help. John

The more expensive ones will be a bit better overall. No matter what though Monoprice will come in at about half of what you will pay most other places and WAY less than some Monster Cable rip-offs will be.

I was extremely impressed with the monoprice HDMI. They only offer one standard cable. The 24AWG in various lengths. (the other is for in wall)Amazing quality for the price.

Monoprice.com also sells cables on eBay. They have a 28AWG HDMI cable (10 feet I think) on eBay for $2.95 Buy It Now with $6.95 shipping. If I need another HDMI cable in the future, I am going this route.

I have been looking at some new HDMI and component cables for my new toys I bought myself for Christmas.:D The monoprice cables are coming in at around 1/3 or less of the Blue Jeans, Impact Acc, etc. prices. Is there that much of a difference? I mean, if there is not that much diff, why pay 110-130 for a 25ft. three RCA set when you can get the premium set from m/p for under 25? I don't mind spending it if there is that much of a gain, though.

The Monoprice cables work perfectly. There is no reason whatsoever to buy anything any more expensive

If you have a low-end system, buy low-end cables from Monoprice. But if you spent $10K+ I think it's definitely worth it to buy cables from Blue Jeans. But I don't think I'd ever buy anything more expensive than Blue Jeans, regardless of the system. I generally try to reserve about 5% of budget for cables.

Because they do perform better
That's a big statement.

Do you think a $100 iPod USB cable will perform better than a $10 one?

No, USB cables are bit-perfect. There are measurable differences between Monoprice and Blue Jeans cables that can become more noticeable with high-end equipment.

It's really not... cables made to higher standards using better parts perform better.

HDMI is not bit-perfect? Do Monoprice cables drop more bits than Blue Jeans cables? How many bits do Blue Jeans cables drop?

Depends, try using a Monoprice HDMI cable for a 50ft. run, it will drop enough bits for you to get no picture if you try 1080p

Are you saying that Monoprice cables are only inferior if you're using them on a 50' run for 1080p?

That is a testable claim you are making here. Please show that evidence, thanks.

How much better? Is it detectable by eye or by the ears? Please show further evidence for this claim. After all, a 5 ft cable measures better than a 10ft cable, no?

No, but if they can't carry 1080p over 50' but they can over 3', that proves that there is signal degradation even though they are digital, hence the reason to buy Blue Jeans cables with high-end gear.

That conclusion does not follow the premise in any way whatsoever.

You're so sure that the bits are different over short runs, show us the evidence as the other poster requested.

Alright, I'll reason it out then. If 1080p doesn't work at 50ft, then the cable can't be transferring the signal exactly. Since the 3ft and 50ft cables use the same cable and connectors, then this degradation must also occur on the 3ft cable, but just to a lesser degree so that the picture still appears. Since Blue Jeans HDMI cables work at 1080p over 50ft and further, it is safe to infer that this degradation occurs to a lesser degree with their cables. Whether this difference in signal degradation is noticeable over short runs is arguable, but if you are spending a lot of money a system I would spend more on the cables to ensure the signal is maintained as much as possible. I hope this clarifies.

If a 50' Monoprice cable drops bits and results in no picture, that does not at all mean that a 10' Monoprice cable will drop bits.

A 50' USB cable will drop enough bits simply not to work. However, an identical USB cable that is 10' will probably be 100% bit perfect.

These aren't analog connections transmitting analog signals. I think you're having trouble understanding that.

If you don't have any evidence whatsoever that a 10' Monoprice cable will drop more bits than a 10' Blue Jeans cable, I'd suggest you stop claiming it's the case. It's a total guess with no evidence whatsoever.
