which Denon DVD to buy?

I have Denon AVR-3803 and am looking to upgrade to a Denon DVD player. I am not and avid DVD watcher but I plan to be. I do not have any DVD-A or SACD's yet( frankly, I think that the catalog of classic rock discs available is kind of lame in that catagory). So... can somebody recommend a Denon DVD that is compatable with my AVR-3803? It doesn't have to be a changer. I am more concerned with it's guts. It can be a leftover model. I am more concerned with value that cutting edge technology that I probably won't appreciate. I was leaning towards the DVD2200 or 2900 but with the new 2910 available should I just buck up for that? Is there a 2210 model on the way that I should wait for?

One of the new players would be cool, but the '2200 should be a good deal right now since it's been replaced. There's not a lot of difference between it and the model that replaces it.

I basically agree with Rob. The 2910 adds some very cool features for video and the Denon link for SACD/DVD-A but if these are not priorities then a 2200 or 2900 may be great as you may be able to strike a good deal.

My take on SACD/DVD-A is that I would get a player for both since the "winning" format is not yet clear. I have found that reissues of older material on SACD have been unimpressive unless the original CD remix was poor. New material on either format can be superb however. Unless you like newer rock the best stuff out there is recently recorded classical, the Blue Man Group "Audio" and the Chessky jazz releases IMO. I should point out that others on this site strongly disagree regarding older stuff.

I believe the ability of the recording engineer and the studio quality is FAR more important than the format the music is on. Just try a Mapleshade CD as a case in point.

I do not think the 2910 has the Denon link. You would have to go to the 3910 to get the Denon link.

I too own a Denon 3803 and two weeks I ago got my 2910. I got my mind on the 2200 but the availibity of the 2910 at a very good price with lots of improvements made the choice easy. Audio quality is very good which is for me the most important usage of the 2910. Video quality is the best you can get for this price and it is very good. HDMI an DVI interfaces make it a good choice for future plans for a bigger screen/projector.
I'm very satified with the 2910 and am seriously re-discovering my cd collection again.

AVR-3803, DVD-2910, Monitor Audio Silver S8, Monitor Audio SLCR...

Just to be clear, DenonLink does not pass SACD. You need to use the analog 5.1 cables for this.

The main advantage of the newer models is being able to pass video over a digital connection..DVI/HDMI. If you don't intend to use that type of connection with your display then the retired 2200/2900 would give you a better price-performace machine. The 2900 is a more substantial player with better dacs than the 2200. Or, you could go full bore like the Viking Dwarf above and get the 3910 :D

And to be even clearer, the 2910 does not have Denon Link. ;)
