Which CD player under $1000.00

It's time to upgrade my current Cambridge Audio 640C v.1. I've looked into quite a few players under that thousand buck ceiling. They are; PS Audio's digital link III (dac), CEC 3300R, Consonance CD-120 linear, Marantz SA-8001, and Rega's Apollo. Are there any one or two choices here that rise above the others in making good music. Thanks.

I have a question for you, Steve. Is there something wrong with that Cambridge?
Do you have a DVD player and if so, what is wrong with it playing CDs?
If you don't have a DVD player, is that because you don't need one or still deciding?

How about an RCA Carousel player, if still available, that was found to be audibly indistinguishable from ones costing $1000s, or, a good DVD player, dual role as a CD player, such as an Oppo, Denon, Etc?

No, Steve, sorry. I think they will all sound about the same unless one has a defective D/A converter. They will also sound about the same as a $100 DVD player that also plays movies. The last piece of high end gear I sold was an outboard D/A converter. I hung onto it, I guess, to keep some vestige of my former audiophile self. After realizing the converters built into the CD and DVD players produced the same results as the big expensive outboard unit, it didn't make any sense to keep it around. Save your money. What really matters in audio playback is room acoustics first and speakers a distant second. The rest of the stuff is pretty trivial as long as it is competently designed and made.
