Ok, I have been looking at in ceiling speakers and I have gotten some good info. Mazer has provided a ton of good stuff.

Well, now I need to know which style of in ceiling speaker I should get.

These are going to be used for surrounds in a 5.2 system. The system will eventually be upgraded to a 7.2 system but for now I will stick with these. They will go in the ceiling around the halfway point of the room which would be slightly behind the first row of seats and almost directly above the second row of seats (there is potential to slide them further back in the room so that they are behind both rows of seating since I have about 9 ft of open space behind the second row of seats). Should I go with the Speakercraft Aim8 One or the Speakercraft AimWide One? I guess ultimately I am asking if the directional sound of the Aim8 is better than the dipole sound of the AimWide? The final outcome of the room will have additional bookshelf speakers mounted on the rear wall as the surround speakers so I thought I should add that info in case it makes a difference in the suggestions. I know the surrounds are supposed to just be used for ambient sound and I would think the Aim Wide would be better suited for that…but I’m not sure which would really be the better performer.

That is what I was leaning toward but I don't have a real reason for why. As somebody who is familiar with these types of speakers can you state why the more focused Aim8 would be better for the surround application over the AimWide?

In your situation IMO the AIM Wides would be better because of the position the speaker will be placed. It will give a diffused sound-field between the seating.
