From what I've demo'd, the Sony CRT WS was by far the best picture, but was quite a bit more expensive than most. Does your family have an HD receiver running to these DLP's and LCD's? Those units look terrible with a standard cable/satellite feed.

I just bought the Sony widescreen 30". It looks awesome. I based my decision on in-store previews, price, and the ratings in consumer reports. CU said Sony was best in all categories, hands down. I would have gone 34", but it wouldn't fit in my TV furniture, and the wifey wasn't about to go for different furniture as well  (it was tough enough to convince her we needed a WS, HD TV and an audio upgrade)

I was going to stay away from Sony, primarily because of the inflated prices, but at least the 30 is priced about the same as all other brands ($900 at Circuit City).

If you don't go Sony, check out the Toshibas. The 34" is cheaper than the Sony and looks pretty darn nice as well.

Good luck!

I just got the Sony 32"

Nearly got the Toshiba though I was told it doesnt do 720p output??

Salesman did a flick through the different output modes on a HD set top box and the toshiba wouldnt play 720 progressive.

i have the 34hs420 and love it. comparing it to the xbr 960 which has all "the bells a whistles" the picture looks the same, over even better from what i saw in the store. Don't buy an xbr if you not going to use all the features, ie. cable card slot, pip, etc...and save yourself $600+.

Ultimate Electronics is on the last days of a closeout here in Texas.

I was in the store yesterday when a freakin Denon 5803 was sold for $1300 (60% off) right in front of my face. :( Today, I went back in with my wife .. as I was lobbying for a RX-Z1 they had at $1000 yesterday and it was apparently sold for $715 (70% off)today, not to me. :(

We did buy a Zenith 34 inch CRT HDTV for our bedroom, to replace our aging Panasonic SDTV from the 90s. The thing shows as 480i, 480p, 1080i on the web page .. but in the manual and as for the playing it also supports 720p, and looks damn good.

On the bright side of people getting good deals on the stuff, i paid $800 after tax (60% off) for it with a remote and a manual and now I can get a HD-DVR in my bedroom to boot. I might get me another JVC D-VHS player now that we can watch them there, too. :)

To make a long story short, though, the picture on the Zenith looks damn amazing, and dont trust the specs on the web page, regarding the 720p support.

The XS and XBR have super fine pitch which really does make a visual difference between them and the HS. Only difference between the XS and XBR is the XBR has 2-tuner PIP and a 2-year warranty.
