That is correct. Yes, it was based on novels and so honestly described as fiction. However the essence of the story did adhere largely to the essence of the history as we know it. Just remember watching it, there is huge artistic license!

I think artistic license is necessary to fill in the blanks, and keep it interesting. Being Scandinavian myself, I always find these stories interesting. I really enjoyed The last kingdom and actually watched it twice. A couple years apart. Vikings was fun, but I think took more liberties. Far more teeth intact than probably in reality. lol.
