where to start for receiver and speakers - very large room

I am starting research on setting up home theater. I have a very large room - 22x37. walls are 10' high topped with a cathedral ceiling with a peak of 26feet. the flooring is ceramic tile. with the plethora of equipment out there I was hoping someone might give me some pointers to get started on my search.

How much power will I need in an A/V receiver for this large room. What level of equalizer or sound control will I need to help me tame this room from too much mid-range? what about echo with all the hard surfaces?

Speakers - I am leaning toward 5.1 but also support 2-channel music listening. Subwoofer - will I need a lot of power to fill the room? how much wattage?

That depends on your speakers.

Select your speakers first. Then worry about buying a receiver to power them.

...and always buy the biggest, baddest subwoofer you can afford. You can always turn a powerful one down but you can turn a weak one up only so much.

One other tip... Since you say music has a place in your future, I suggest that when selecting your speakers, use music, not a movie. Too many times we hear that speakers sound great on a movie but lack on music. I can't ever recall hearing someone say they sound great on music but not on movies.

oh, one last thing... I know you're new here and didn't know, but It's considered bad manners to post the same query in multiple forums.

Probably best if you went the pre-pro + dedicated amp route for the powering of the speakers.

Step 1. Establish a budget, or range that you are willing to work within. We can move forward from there. Very different answers if you say two thousand than if you say twenty thousand.
